I bet Kessel would score at LEAST 80 goals playing with Tavares.

it's something NEW to talk about

I am doing the best I can to not follow the hockey conversation since we are starting to rival the Sundin and Forsberg and Kaberle days with our constant rehashing of the same crap.

Do you think we should trade for Luongo? What do you think it would take to get him?

Yes we get Luongo

It will take a mid round pick.......... hopefully Burke can stick Gillis with Komi too

I've been involved in a debate like that before.

For example, look at Crosby. His wingers don't score more because they play with him. Notable examples: Kunitz and Malone. They have pretty much the same numbers year after year, with or without Crosby as their center.

gillis is gonna set a price no one will be willing to match.. then, because gillis is no fool.. he will wait til the trade deadline and get a ransom for him from a team who thinks that an established goalie might put them over the top

seriously.. if you were gillis would you trade him now.. with almost no market?

no.. you wouldnt.

wait til the season starts, someone is bound to get hurt or come out of the gate slow driving the price up for luongo

for the nucks, moving him now would be dumb

kessel: more offensively gifted, faster

hartnell: more balanced game

both are stars, neither are superstars

- Dozzer

hartnell is 5 years older...Kessel has time to become said superstar!

Wouldn't they just be playing with malkin, or staal though?

Edit: nevermind, was thinking they were still playing pitts. Didn't really look at the names, was just thinking you were talking about his linemates now

malone is a tough argument tho.. he left pittsburgh to go play in tampa where he has guys like st louis and lecavalier feeding him.. and now stamkos.. so really.. he just switched which all stars he is playing with

as for kunitz, you could make a similar argument, went from playing with high end offensive talent in anaheim to playing with high end talent in pittsburgh

some guys are offensive role players.. a line of three of them might not do as well.. but they are the perfect augment for a true star's line (ie crosby)

The only potential arguements against this would be

1) How does it affect their negotiations with Schneider?

2) How is their cap situation if Lu starts the season with them? Does carrying his cap hit prevent them from doing something else this off-season?

... I think Lolnogo remains a Canuck to start the season, and someone *will* panic during the season at some point.

He needs the cap space to improve his team and sign Schneider.

He cannot wait till the trade deadline. I do not think a deal will happen until about mid summer though, when Gillis realises there is no other team that will take that contract

was yet another Nuck fan in the Ek thread trying to "sell" the fact Luongo is an elite talent and should garner an elite return. He wants Hossa

Gillis could get a decent little package for Schneider, and given how close the team is, I dont know why he wouldnt tweek the team with said package and just keep Luongo!! If Lu won them the cup next year, all the hate would likely disappear. IMO, best move for them is to move Schneider unless they find a sucker to pay fair price for Lu.

If Kessel manages to rally 40 goals this year and again next year, does he make that "superstar" mark?

Maybe the better question is what constitutes superstardom?

But you get the idea.

Playing with a better center doesn't mean you'll double your output. Kessel creates his own chances more often than not. He's not standing by the net waiting for a guy to feed him the puck for a tap in.

why does he need cap space? the cap is going up to 67million this year.. and if the new CBA rolls the cap back, salaries roll back with it

gillis is in no way in a tight spot right now.. he still has 12-15million left with only schneider and a couple of role players to sign.. he has more than enough cap space

word is Schneider will hold out though - he wants to be #1. They might not be able to sign Schneider until they trade Lu (as per discussion on That's Hockey yesterday"

Schneider would get you a great deal. Funny thing is though, with Luongo, you know more or less the caliber of goalie. Schneider is probably a little more of a mystery, IMO.

if i were gillis i'd offer schneider a nice fat one year contract to buy time to move luongo.. also, it gives the nucks time to prove to schneider that they actually DO view him as the No 1. which would make resigning him next year all the more easier

I judge people not by what they "could" offer, but what they "have" offered....and Kessel is a great scorer with lots of skill, and has improved his two way game over his time here. Whether or not he becomes a complete player or reaches 40 goals is up to him, and Staal.
