no team has ever been this bad, but they are in good shape

Have they surprised everyone except you? Everyone but you were idiots to think they would bad this year. They won't surprise you though because you know this will be a good team.

I typically agree w Tanner on most things but my spider sense tells me that Strome is a bust. Before you critique that, I assure you I have nothing to back it up other than how long it is taking him to break into the N with all his supposed scoring touch.

not only Strome, but Max Domi is regressing every year

With the team doing this poorly, it makes more sense to leave Strome in the AHL. The guy has 15pts in 10 games. Let him continue to learn and gain confidence.

It's just brutal. I can't imagine being a Coyotes fan and being asked to pony up my hard earned cash to see this. When I was a kid the Devils did plenty of losing but there were a bunch of weak teams and it didn't seem quite as horrific as this. This has just been going on too long. Every year it's the same 'Arizona is going to be better' routine and every year it's awful. #sad.... as our president would say.

Maybe keeping Doan would have been better.

True, but the team sucks so bad I think everyone should regress... It is probably bad for everyone's development to be on such a team. This might be the first example of over-tanking!

maybe the core isn't as good as you think it is James; could be you overrate them big time. Maybe the vets are a bad combo with the young core. Lots of reasons why they are off to a piss poor start.

The GM isn't as bad as many make him out to be. Made a lot of good moves on paper.
The GM also isn't as good as you seem to think he is either. Would it be foolish to fire him? yes it would.

He Needs to ride it out for now and assess the team he has put together.

James serious question. What drafts was chayka involved since he came to the coyotes as don't remember when he was hired.

A bargain basement cap floor team can't afford to pay "retail" for any of its players

The only way the Coyotes will EVER compete is with young players on ELC contracts and bridge deals, and with veterans willing to play for "please let me play the game, recoup my value, extend my career" type contracts

The Stephan/Raanta deal was Fn terrible and Chayka shoud be fired for it

The Goligoski deal wasn't anything to write home about either

Agreed, its definitely not helping build character as Tanner stated in the blog. These young lads will only know what it's like to lose, and turning that losing culture into a winning culture will be real difficult. Good luck Coach Tocchet!

Thats why I'd keep any young drafted player in Jr, or the AHL as long as possible, and then bring them all in at once coupled with the signing of veteran players who can actually play. Get 3-5 years of value on the players ELC/Bridge deals and fill out the rest of the team with Vets, even take on a few "bad contract/good player" type trades to get to the cap floor

After the 5 years are up, sell off and start over. If you pay any player what he's "worth" on a cap floor team you'll never have enough good guys around him with all the parity to ever win anything

the Coyotes are primed to make a deal with the Devils where they take back Ryan Clowe's 4.65 mil cap hit so they can stay above cap floor

Advanced analytic strategy may --- and I say "MAY" work in Baseball as it is so deeply based in mathematical structure. Baseball often comes down to a one on one match up where other players are incidentals. Hockey is a game on the fly with far more daily unmanageable intangibles --- who is on the ice, who is injured, who is officiating, just to name three but there are many many more.

Hockey teams that base their strategies on Analytic data get what they deserve. Corsi is the most overrated and misunderstood data package that eliminates too many human factors to be real. Save Corsi for EA Sports where there are no human factors.

For TSN,

(And I am now secretly hoping you miss the 8 win Capitals... just for the history of it)

20 games is a little past the small sample size threshold. Tocchet needs to go, as well as the GM that hired him.

Depends what the expectations are. If the GM told the owner what Tanner told us, that they have a "top-5 defense" and they're a lock to make the playoffs, then yeah, they should go. If he told the owner "we suck, strap yourself in with velcro shoes, we're gonna blow" then why fire them?

I don't know how many teams have a better defense than OEL, Demers, Goligoski, Hjallmarson, Chychrun, Schen.

One thing that really elevates this into the top of the rankings is Chychrun, who has played zero games so far.

Also, their starting goalie is coming off a groin injury and has played only nine of twenty games. It's way too early to judge anything.
