Eklund: McDavid Three Year Deal?

“ so why take the max salary in 2025 for the next eight years?”

Nothing comes to mind. What could go wrong?

Make your choice, max salary, or a chance at a Stanley Cup.
Its not both.

For a guy that says winning cups is the most important thing, it seems dumb to keep taking max salary and handcuffing your team to fill out a deep roster. I McDavid is being Mcselfish. If you want cups give your team wiggle room to sign other good players.

He wants bank right now. In 8 yrs when he has no cup and hundreds of millions he will go somewhere to a legit contender for cheap.

2 year deal would be better and see and AM become UFAs at the same time. How much fun would that be for everyone except 2 GM’s?

He should wait it out, let’s see what Bowman can do to improve the roster. Looks like they’re waiting for Albertan, Carter Hart, to be cleared of all charges.
On another note, why would anyone want to live in Edmonton?

He can choose his own lifestyle next year and still get paid. I’m sure his wife loves living in Edmonton.

She’s from Toronto so Edmonton is an upgrade.

The city appeal is exaggerated. Some guys on cruise control care about this. But a guy like McDavid or Crosby are so focused on winning that nothing else really matters. You are on the road 50% of the time. At home you have strict game-day routines. There are very few days off.

If McDavid lived in Florida or California do you really think he'd spend his afternoons golfing or surfing? If he lived in New York would he be going to clubs or Broadway shows? No chance.

Then in the summer, you go wherever you want.

In Edmonton, fans are actually pretty respectful. It's not crazy like Toronto or Montreal. Everyone recognizes the players, but they are mostly left alone.

He may want to do what past Oiler greats like Gretzky and Messier did and try to win elsewhere while still in his prime.

McDavid has actually talked about how much easier it is to live in Edm vs TO.
He talked about how its a nightmare to commute in TO.
