Great read Trevor, thanks
Interesting on Backs last year. Sutter not naming a captain was a huge mistake. I’ve heard Weegar, Backlund and Andersson are the 3 favourites..I’d be ok with any of those choices. Although not giving 11 the C would surely push him out the door and I’m not sure we should do that. |

Can you name Backs as C if he's not signed beyond this year?

Interesting material as always Trevor.
If I am understanding correctly Backland is basically saying he will evaluate the progress of the team before making a decision whether to stay.
Not a great foundation for the "commitment" needed to captain an NHL team.
Weeger or Rasmus. They are locked and have no subjects. |

Well if Management & Coaches feel Backlund had been in the captain role & feel he would make a good captain going forward, I would hope that they offer him the C if he were to extend to a reasonably valued contract. If he still doesnt want to sign, then no problem , pick Weegar or Andersen & no hard feelings. Trade him at the TDL or whenever the Bruins want to pony up for him. |

Just feels right for this season that he gets the captaincy. If he wants to go at the end of the season that’s fine. The organization should do right by him and give him what he wants after 15 years of consistently sharp performance.

Agreed, if he's been the defacto captain all along, makes sense to make it official. If they move him in a few months, so be it. They are rebuilding the culture of this team so why not let the most influential player be part of that. |

No be a huge mistake, he needs to sign extension to be captain or it’s Anderson all the way I like Weager but he hasn’t been here long enough to be captain |

First I would be amiss to not acknowledge Backlands role in the community culminating in winning the King Clancy award.
Having said that it seems to me that Backland has been well paid over the last 15 years relative to his production.
After all he was a front line part of those lean years.
As a "shut down" centremen Backland struggled immensely over the years
trying to contain big body centres like Jamie Benn.
Backland is coming off of his best year ever and yet his main line mates Mang and Coleman both had significant drops in their numbers.
I stand by my belief that the Flames have been more than fair to Backland over the years and I feel with the whole cap space issue a 34 year third line centre is more than fairly treated at $5 mil plus. |

Why would signing an extension be necessary? He’s the longest current Flame, who took on the role last year without the Flames naming him. He’s got leadership and respect from his teammates. The only way I see it not happening is if he comes out and says again, he wants out, even so trade him at the TDL.
I’ve been a big Andersson for captain guy, but Backlund is a great choice. |

IMO this team has had enough bad press in the last two years. If Backs signs an extension before the regular season starts, then yes make him captain. But he has pretty much asked for a trade. I Can understand if Backs wants to go somewhere that has a chance at a cup.
It would make Calgary look even more like a Tire fire if the new Captain does not want to sign an extension. That would be some bad press. |

Its only a buck a month and they have some excellent prospect and draft coverage.
Anyway no Pelts but Honzek #53, Coronato # 82, Zary #104, Wolf #150.

Cause naming him captain would be a slap in the face to Anderson if backland is captain for one year and leaves |

Do you think with all these players wanting out, it might have something to do with how the team was run last year? Or is it just a carry over from the departure of Mony, Johnny and Chucky? |

A bit of both. The attitude of Kadri and Hubs last year was poopty. Yes Suter is a Richard but when players buy in they can do well. Hubs and Kadri quit on the team.
I think Lindholm and Backs want to win a cup. The flames are a bubble team. They need everything to go right this year. Will be the same next year. |

The narrative that the Flames didn't buy into Sutter's system or that Huberdeau gave up on the team is nonsense. Sure, the players hated him, but they also did everything they were asked to do. They gave up the third-fewest shots and had the second-most. That isn't easy to do and takes buy-in and a ton of effort. Both Huberdeau and Kadri had possession numbers that were around their career best and better than Lindholm's.
Sutter's system stifles all offensive creativity and needs a top goalie to work. Even with everything else that sucked last year, if the Flames had had a top goalie, they would've been successful.
Kadri was awful to end the year, but who knows what else was going on. |

Who was the toughest Flame ever???
McGrats? Kyte? Hunter?
It feels odd not having a goon on the team. |

IMO it's between McGratton and Fotiu....And McCarthy is in the conversation too. |
