I'm a bit surprised he has not been extended yet. the more Hughes waits, the more he'll have to pay. maybe at camp.
I expect another good season from Monty, looks like a real nice guy, happy to be here, good size, good mobility... what' not to love.

I don't think Monty is going to be the goalie when this team wants to really win, but I think he is an adequate guy to have around now and might settle into the back-up spot down the road. He should get at least 50-55 starts this season.

Allen and DeSmith are not here for long, regardless of what the Habs decide to do with their 4 goaltenders. That being said, either should be able to fill in the back-up role for 30-ish games. I do think Allen, if he is currently healthy, will stay and DeSmith is just an emergency placeholder in case Allen is not ready or won't play. It is likely DeSmith is the odd man out.

As for Primeau, we have not seen much growth in his game for a few years now, and I have little confidence he will be playing for the Habs organization for much longer - either traded or lost via waivers. I think the fact they drafted 3 goalies in 2023 points to not only the organizational weakness at this position, but also a general feeling it might be time to move on from Primeau.

So sign Monty to an extension, but don't not get crazy with those terms.

I'm not totally sure about that one. look at Ullmark in Boston, now considered one of the best. that was certainly not the case when he was in BUF.
provide Monty with a good defense, let him get some milage as the #1... and we might have a surprise.

Montembault is good enough to be an average starter in this league. Hell the stats indicates he might be more than that with a decent team in front of him.

I think they should extend him now because, I agree with Fido, he's going to cost more after what should be his best season so far next year.
