Jan, nice work.

My grip with the Rangers is when they hire coaches, no matter who the GM is, the coaches more often than not have input on who the players they want to see on the Roster.

For example, Rangers hire Lavy. Rangers then sign sign Erik Gustafsson. And that's a good deal. He's the best player they signed thus far. The problem is not with Gustafsson. they problem lies with the team. Because I think, Gustafsson is gonna have the inside track on that 6 D-man job. Both Gustafsson and Jones are similar players. Not Physical, but skilled. I bring this up because Ben Harpur is still in the mix.

That I think Jones isn't gonna get a chance to earn that job. I have no knowledge of that. But in terms of players getting gifted jobs by the Rangers due to familiarity with the coach, Gustafsson is far from the worst player.

But the coach driving who they like is probably somewhat of the norm, not an exception. The question itself was: Do you think too much emphasis is put on what other orgs are doing? (by mgmt? coaches? players? fans?) What you are describing is who makes the determination on roster construction and playing time, the coach or the GM

It's probably not a bad thing to give a young player some real competition for the job though. Gustafsson has been an easy throwaway player throughout his career, so if Jones forces their hand it shouldn't be too hard to cut him loose. And if the latter doesn't happen then more development is never bad for a young defenseman.

This. Jones still has to earn his roster spot. Solid competition is healthy and in the best interest of everyone

both Gustafsson and Wheeler are examples of why trade picks for depth at the deadline when you can sign them for free in the off season

Yeah. He's fine on the AAV. Makes less the Goodrow and is better but 7 years. woof.
