It's the best value contract in the league, no question. He'll get paid and if he settles for 13 million then it will be a gift the entire team will reap. I don't think anyone is going to take Huberdough off Calgary without a few bucks retained though.

Nurse had 1 less even strength point than Huberdeau, has a cap hit of 9.25 and is only signed until he's 35. If he's 3rd pairing than Hubie is bottom 6.

There are a few real things that can guard against this -

Signing players early in their careers with the expectations they continue to improve and ultimately making the contract a bargain.

Setting an internal limit to contract max values. Admittedly, this will cause you to lose players at certain times.

When the CBA is re-negotiated, switch to non-guaranteed contracts similar to the NFL.

Collusion.

I think this is a smart play for the Leafs in signing Matthews! Papi is a huge Doaner fan and close friend!
