Malkin and Tanger go to FA
Tanger wants too much term, Malkin seems to only play 1/2 a season.
Maybe Klingberg and Trocheck do much better; they are younger and Trocheck should be cheaper and definitely much more durable . |

Klingberg will cost them both on and off the ice He is not the Dman that Letang is
Probably better on the power play but after that I DON'T THINK SO. He will want longer term and mo money PASS |

Klingberg is weak he’s like Pettersen but with some offense, except he doesn’t really score either. hard pass |

Sort of agree on Zucker (shocking I know). I don't mind moving him. But once we start picking up salary to do so, I'm not interested. I'd just as soon have him play out this year and use his cap space next year to keep Jarry and Blueger.
If they can magically find someone to pick up his last year, I'm fine with that to. But what I wouldn't do is trade him, add on some dead space, and sign another wing to a long-term deal if that means they don't have money next off-season for Jarry. |

A few things to keep in mind regarding the 23/24 season and keeping Jarry:
-The cap may go up, albeit a little
-JJ’s buyout hit drops by $1M
-Dumo, if he’s not extended, his salary drops off.
If POJ steps in, he may be ready for 2nd pairing duty after a year, so finding a 3rd pairing dman probably doesn’t cost much.
I think they can make Jarry’s likely $2 to $3M bump work even if they trade and replace Zucker’s salary. |

Sounds like the Pens are bringing back DeSmith. Two years in a row we needed a good backup and two years in a row CDS was hurt. I guess Hexy is willing to burn another year on the same tandem. Idiot. |

Unless Malkin and Letang accept contracts for a maximum of 2 years at 7 million per year. I prefer not to sign them and keep money to overpay if necessary a younger elite player like Gaudreau for example and if we find nothing interesting this season I am of the opinion to keep money on the payroll until they can sign an elite player in the years to come. It's not the time to mortgage the payroll with players with big salaries at the end of their careers |

I guess I kind of assumed trading Dump, so if one is kept I don't see a problem.
Perhaps in a year they can dump another LD and move up POJ as you said. I think people have written him off for not being here yet, but I think he was ready but blocked and played well in his brief time here last year.
I don't think the cap will be going up much if at all yet. Maybe after that year. But at least I can get behind dumping another LHD potentially. Will still not want to carry a lot of dead cap just to move Zucker though, sort of defeats the purpose of moving him IMO. |

Agree this is pretty uninspiring. Can't imagine what the hold up is, DeSmith can't have much leverage. |

I’d like to upgrade from CDS, but when you look at who’s available he’s actually one of the better ones. Not many options. I’m hoping maybe Lindberg will be healthy and ready to get a look. |

The only reason why we lost against Rangers is that we had no quality backup and even Tristan Jarry if he is good in the first half of the season becomes less good at the end of the season and he is clearly not a goaler that he excels in series |

I said after Jarry dropped the ball in the Islanders series that the Penguins needed to either upgrade the #2 or #3 goalie given the small cost to do so. They chose not to and here we are again.
Bringing DeSmith back makes no sense. |

I think the Pens would have beat NYR with Casey in net. He had a terrible start to the season, but he pulled it together. |

In this case you accept in 2 years to have a dying team for many years while being taken by the throat by the payroll

Good chance they beat the Islanders too. When Jarry crapped the bed, they needed a decent backup to win a game or two and let him regroup. CDS wasn't healthy. I don't understand a former tender gambling yet again on the same tandem. I hope the rumors aren't true. |

Well if you look at FA there really isn’t many choices. DeSmith is honestly one of, if not the best backup available. |

I dont disagree, but if you cant stay healthy, you arent a good enough option at backup |

Also if you can't be trusted to play so the coach runs the starter into the ground you aren't good enough.
But so long as we upgrade the second line, we can pretend will go right with our goalies. And if not our defense can shut it down. |

Here's a snapshot of the goalies available. I sorted by SV% and didn't include the top give goalies because most only plays two or three games and only one played five.
CDS is arguably the best back-up available. Yes yes, MAF, but I just don't think he's financially feasible.
Via trade when you look at who's likely available via trade they're probably going to cost more in assets than they should get or their cap is still too much, i.e. Jake Allen.

Playing around on CF again with updated realistic expectations(No Nichushkin, Kadri, Paul etc.) and even with bringing back Tanger and Geno, we could still dress a seriously solid team the next 3 years. Would appreciate your opinions on this...

You’re going to resign a goalie with two consecutive years of season ending core surgeries. It makes zero sense. I am in 100% agreement. The bigger issue is on the horizon. This team has no plan for the future and will be golfing again come may 2023. |

I hope Rakell signs for cheap. Idk if the Zucker trade would happen. I also think they go younger and we see O'Connor play full time and another player or 2. I also believe if they did sign someone for the bottom 6. I think they bring back ZAR. Overall not bad! I wish we did this |

If going back to DeSmith and Jarry is the best option in net the Pens should just tank this year for Bedard.
I am hoping the reason they are "negotiating" with DeSmith is because they are trying to get him on a 2 way deal.
Jarry needs legit competition as we are setting ourselves up to give him the deal Ottawa gave Murray. Jarry isn't a franchise goalie.
Varlomov would be a good get. Fluery is an obvious ideal fit. The Pens were a decent goalie away from being a contender this year... I just want to go all in or all out. |
