Best spicy mustards in the US, which are never as good as the Asian ones, are all from Brooklyn.

NO!!! Blasphemous! Just kidding. What you like is what you like. Got me thinking about Katz’s Deli in Lower East Side NYC. Unbelievable pastrami. I go seedless rye, no cheese, and lots of the brown deli-mustard that’s sitting on the table. Don’t know what it is. Don’t care. Put a few bucks in the cup, at the counter, when you order your sandwich and you’ll get a sandwich bigger than your head!

I havent been there in probably 20 years. They used to have rolls that were were surprisingly great for a pastrami sandwich too. But that pastrami is good you really can t go wrong.

PS: I had leftover red and green Christmas enchiladas for lunch.

There is a similar place in west philly to Katz and those Lower East side/Brooklyn joints. Koch's on 43 and Locust. Fallen from its glory days but still pretty good pastrami and brisket.

Paul Stewart has told me that when he was a student at Penn, the owners at Koch's used to feed him for free. I lived at 47th and Pine for a number of years. Went to the latter-day version of Koch's a handful of times. Was still good.

Oh ok those were well past the glory days of that neighborhood. It was already well into gentrification and becoming boring.

Up till the 1997 or so, there used be a somewhat bohemian culture there. Lots of African American families, lots of artists (not the hipster kind but older), lots of anarchists. And it was pretty sketchy at night, muggings were so routine.

The anarchists used to gather at the bar of Dahlak. I used to be there every night till late, drinking weird cocktails.

On a more tragic note, I was taking a class in 1994 spring. A student in it was becoming a friend. We hung out that summer in your former neighborhood.

He died under tragic circumstances. It shook the entire city.

Thanks for the tip. I'm in my 50s. I try not to eat much fatty red meat these days, but I'd make an exception for a great hot pastrami sandwich. Real kosher deli food is so good...it's all fat and salt. My favorite food groups. Side order of kishke? Liver knish?Pickles? Wash it all down with a Dr. Browns Cel-ray soda!
