Burke actually benefitted from all Bryan Murray's work. But nice try. |

We paid a fair price for Toffoli.
I say that for 4 reasons:
1) it’s an inter division trade that usually ups the price albeit the LAK are in rebuild mode.
2) cap out with Schaller was necessary.
3) recent injury to Boeser & Ferland done for the season made this more urgent given the Canucks commitment to the PO’s.
4) JB on record he sought a top 6 winger |

Just curiously though, what work do you think Murray did to that team? Couple role players sure, but the biggest additions of Selanne, Niedermayer and Pronger, that was Burke. I know nobody is a fan of Burke here but thats your #1 and #2 defenceman and top line winger. JS Giguere? That was Jack Ferriera. And you can’t even say the 2003 Draft because that draft was so stacked. Anybody could have picked something decent. |

I'm OK with the Coleman trade, pending results.
Coleman is a late-bloomer and was producing at a good clip while playing on a troubled team that was not a contender. Transplant him to Tampa where he plugs into a successful system and I expect his production will only increase. He will probably get a few looks playing alongside Point, Stamkos, and Kucherov just for giggles, which could be interesting. Coleman strikes me as a Palat type with better speed (and probably better hands).
The deadline market always drives prices up and reports said at least two other teams were involved in the bidding. One of those teams was rumored to be Boston, and Tampa definitely doesn't want the Bruins landing a player like Coleman. So that fact makes it a little more expensive for Tampa to outbid a division rival on this guy.
Lastly, look at the contract value. Less than $2-million for a Top-6 guy is great. He's a two playoff run rental at worst, but at least he's under contract for another season after this one. And he's putting up great stats for a guy making that kind of money.
Yeah, the price was steep. But, the pick the Devils received will be a late pick, so it's not likely to net a game-breaker. Foote is tracked to be a solid NHL'er, so he's the real meat in this trade. Foote and a roll of the dice for a proven Top-6 player with speed, hands, and sandpaper. Given Tampa's current status as a stacked contender with a reputation for being soft in the playoffs, Coleman fills a definite need.
So far (pending results of course), everybody wins in this trade. The Devils get a player who is going to be at least a top or middle-six guy in a couple of years, and they get a 1st rounder to play with in their rebuild, or use as a trade chip.

Besides the many insiders and pundits I've heard share that opinion .
Here is an article (although dated) that follows up on what I was saying.

Doug Armstrong is a legend. He acquired Jacob Trouba without the Rangers even knowing about it. |

So Murray was essentially being paid by the Ducks to do nothing? Who told Murray to move up in the draft to take Corey Perry? Ek? |
