I don't know if anyone thinks "Marleau is the answer to their problems ". Probably a lot of people thinking "Marleau for $700K? Hell yeah." |

I don[t think the Rask trade played out that way at all. Pogge won gold that year...but Rask won silver, rask won best goalie and i believe rask was the mvp of the entire tournament...from a losing team.
I think Toronto wanted to offer pogge, boston held their ground asking for rask. rookie gm in toronto gave in.
at the time it was extremely obvious to everyone that rask was the better goalie. even a plug like jf jr would've known it |

I get controversial writing to drum up comments from readers such as myself. But your take on Marleau is a little... wrong? Marleau isn’t a stud, so we won’t go there and pretend he’s going to be a 70 point player. But for 700k, SJ can’t lose on this signing. A down year like last year, still fine for 700k. Injury riddled season? Possible, but Marleau’s picture is beside “durability” in the dictionary. He doesn’t miss games, unless he breaks a hip this season.
Toronto had to move him for cap reasons, to overpay Marner. I’ve been told by sources better than any that Eklund has that Carolina got a first rounder as part of that deal because they agreed to buy him out. The return was less for a team unwilling to agree to buy him out, which would have allowed the acquiring team the flip him again at the deadline (or sooner) for additional assets. |
