Bob Duff: Hot Team, Hot Line The Detroit Red Wings have won six in a row and their top forward line ranks 1-2-3 in NHL scoring since March 23.

This blows. The Wings should have called up Patrick Rybar to give him a look. If he's isn't ready...that's fine. Losing 5-4 is better than winning 4-3. A couple of weeks ago we had a strong shot at Hughes/Kakko. Now we're at risk of falling out of the top 6 or 7. Brutal. Team can't even tank right.

We were pretty much locked in to finish at #2 or 3. That’s a pretty decent chance to land Hughes or Kakko. If we fall to 3-4 it’s still a pretty decent chance to take Byram given our need for defense since our system is still pretty bare. But we’re now on track to finish 6-8, and could potentially fall from there depending on the lottery. Byram and Turcotte and Dach are most likely gone in the 3-4-5 range. So now we’re looking at Krebs, Cozens, Podkolzin, etc…That’s a steep drop off in my opinion. This draft has 3 distinct tiers:

1 : Hughes. Kakko
2: Byram, Turcotte, Dach (any order)
3: Cozens, Krebs, Zegras, Podkolzin, Caufield, etc…

Going 8-2 down the stretch to fall into that 3rd tier is pretty disappointing.

Reminds me of 2009 when you had Tavares-Hedman in one tier, followed by Duchene/Evander Kane/OEL in the next tier, and then a steeper drop off to guys like Kadri/Ellis/Paajarvi/deHaan. Slipping out of tier 1 to tier 2 is bad, but slipping from 2 to 3 is a disaster. 2010 was also similar. Hall and Seguin in one tier, then guys like Johansen, Niedereeiter, Skinner was a big drop off, and then it got real disappointing with a bunch of busts like Burmistrov, McIlrath, Gormley, etc…

If Trouba is made available by the Jets this summer, I've always assumed Detroit would be one of the favorites to trade and sign him long term ( Detroit, NYR, Fla, would be my top three guesses) do you agree and whats a fair trade in your opinion?

Remember, he is still an RFA and Jets wont be forced to trade unless the deal makes sense and he is entering his prime coming off his best year ( 50 points )

Better to just wait until he becomes a UFA and give up nothing.

Okay, for those interested in the draft stakes for tonight:

- If the Wings lose to Buffalo in any fashion, they finish fourth-last overall
- If the Wings beat Buffalo and the Rangers pick up at least a point against Pittsburgh, they finish fifth-last overall
- If the Wings beat Buffalo and the Rangers lose in regulation, they finish sixth-last overall.

If for the sake of argument we think a top-2 pick is awesome, a 3-5 pick is solid, and a 6+ pick is disappointing:

- Fourth-last: 19.1 percent chance top 2, 42.3 percent chance outside top 5
- Fifth-last: 17.2 percent chance top 2, 65.5 percent chance outside top 5
- Sixth-last: 15.3 percent chance top 2, 76.7 percent chance outside top 5
