Peter Tessier: Jets can't afford lapses vs Oilers tonight
Jets need to remember the last game vs Edmonton and prepare for more as improving Oilers visit tonight. - Peter.Tessier
Yes they can. They have done it all year. Scary thing about this team is they really have not put a quality 60 minutes together yet. Little/Ehlers/Perrault/Trouba/Helle have all under produced this far into the year, yet the Jets are dominating. Some games the top line has a quick goal explosion, other nights it is the bottom 6 forwards (how bout that bottom line with appleton!) dominating the opposing teams top 6. I mean Chiarot is a top pairing D?????? Jets have tons of lapses, but more than make up for it with massive depth. This team is a beast! |

Little is in decline, Ehlers is only slightly behind last seasons pace, Perreault is either with Lowry and Tanev (non scoring guys) or under 10 minutes, Trouba is pacing for 41 points, and in Helle’s defence, our defence is a lot shakier than it was last season.
You’re not wrong about Ehlers and Hellebuyck, but it’s also nowhere near bad enough to be a concern.
Also, yeah. Appleton and Roslovic have been great together. They’d work even better with Petan on the left wing.
Chiarot has impressed me, too. He’s not punching well above his weight class now that he’s starting to hold on to the puck instead of panicking |

This looks to me, at least on paper, to be an absolute nightmare for the Oilers. Probably gonna light them up.
For that reason alone, I’m basically all in on Morrissey vs McDavid. So fun. |

I agree with putting Petan with Roslovic and Appleton as they played together with the Moose and would be another fast skilled line to put out and expect some offense. Myers game has taken an up turn once Kulikov got healthy. I still would like to see the Jets play Nuku and Poolman a few games to give them some NHL experience. |

Few things,
Tanev has more goals and points than Perreault so I think he is now the one saying, I’m playing with Perreault (non point guy) lol
Our defence has not been shakier this season at all, Helle has but not our D. And Helle is finding his form again.
I to prefer Petan over Lemieux but honestly both are slow and probably too slow for the nhl. Petan is just smarter and a better play maker but is far from fast.

Also, further to my last point, this is why Petan is a successful AHL’er but may never be in the NHL. The A is ridiculously slower. |

I think Tanev is very underrated. You win with guys like him.

Agreed. That whole line is underrated. Tanev-Lowry-Copp seem to generate offense every night, often matched against the other teams #1 line. And these guys are a combined 5M..... Hate to say it this early in the game, but goodbye Tanev, I don't blame you for leaving the jets when another team offers you 4 years 2.75M AAV. From a BCHL nobody, to a mediocre NCAA player, to leading arguably the best 3rd line in the league. He's earned it every step of the way. |

Tanev deserves the award for most improved, to be sure. Going from literally the worst forward in the NHL as a 26 year old rookie to solid 4th liner is a massive jump at that age. Let’s not make the mistake of assuming he’s anything but that: an offensive 4th liner. Perreault is better in every conceivable way, and I’m honestly amazed anyone with access to TSN or the internet is questioning this.
The Jets are allowing way more shots from the dangerous areas, and were seeing breakdowns all over the place we didn’t last year. It’s improving, as is Helle, but it’s very, very apparent we’re missing Toby (and Kulikov’s loser back).
Petan is more than fine at this level. He was covering for Roslovic a lot of the time defensively while he was in, creating chances all over the ice, and generally improving his linemates. There is no actual area of weakness for Petan outside of being 5’9”. Not saying he’s some sort of god, but simply that he gets over the bar in all situations

Myers has been f*ck off great offensively in these last few games. Attacking from the blueline, and causing all sorts of mayhem |
|
|
|
Reality:
1. Petan just doesn’t have what it takes. Small, average speed, and a lack of grit. I have always been pulling for him, but it’s not likely going to happen for Nic.
2. Enstrom is not a Jet or a NHL player for a reason. He is just not good enough anymore.
3. Copp fits better with Lowry and Tanev than Perreault does.
4. Tanev was not the disaster last season that he is being made out to be.
5. Perreault will have to be traded at some point, either at the deadline or in the off-season.
6. Myers is a Jet until such time that Chevy knows Trouba’s intentions.
7. Chiarot is ok as a #6 d-man. Plays well with Buff.
8. Maurice is a good (not saying great) coach. You want proof- players keep re-signing contracts and nobody appears to be asking for a trade.

1: Petan has proven he has what it takes. His numbers are excellent when he has real linemates, and not Lemieuxs and Hendrickseses and Thorburns
2: Nobody mentioned Enstrom, but your wrong point has been noted. *edit* I totally mentioned Enstrom. I shall take this L.
3: Absolutely correct. Copp should be the 3C, and Lowry the 2C
4: He wasn’t great. Below replacement level, but still improved
5: Doubtful. No need. Tanev and Myers walk, and Kulikov is gone somehow
6: This is a bad move on Chevy’s part, but it’s the path of least resistance, and will therefore happen
7: Fair
8: Id stay with the Jets right now, too. Even if I hated the man, I’d stay. Going back to the Ftorek anecdotes, you’d think Rafalski would ask for a trade with his treatment, but you don’t ditch a cup contender. Many players have spoken out against his decision making, so it’s not a far fetched idea to believe he loses the room if we have a bad losing streak (we won’t). He has Chipman behind him, so either way Chevy goes first if it goes Nuclear somehow. |

Just tuned into the game at 4-4.
Myers just had a great chance, but he was playing with that Turnstile Trouba!
WTH PeeMo? Don’t drag the big guy down!

Jets Defensive depth chart ( in terms of importance to the team) over last 10 games.
1) Buff
2) Morrissey
3) Myers
4) Trouba
5) Chariot
6) Kulikov

Either way I don't see Trouba worth what he is asking. His agent's strategy is backfiring. You rarely see good defenseman trades in the NHL as they tend to stay on teams for quite a while. If the Jets can make a trade to a team that Trouba is willing to sign with then the Jets will get a decent price for him. He's worth $6.5 MM per max. Jets can't afford that. Myers will get extended at $5 MM . Good to see just about everyone finally coming around on both Myers and Tanev. They were both always good but Myers struggled like any defenseman would when paired with borderline defensemen such as the early part of this season. As for board battles I wish Tanev could give lessons to Laine on how to win them. Tanev rarely loses one. |

Trouba will be asking for 8M+. The guy has already done a Nylander-esque hold out, and continually is having contract demands not worth anywhere near his production. If he wants a 6-6.5M aav, great. But I agree with you, when he asks for 8+, use the arbitration rights, sign him and trade him. He is overrated. Career high 33 points, and in his 6th season..... Butcher notched 44 points and will sign under 5M. Morrissey notched 26 points while being vastly better defensively, while costing 3.15M AAV over 2 seasons with RFA rights. Unless Kuli, and Meyers are moved for a decent price, I do not see how the jets can afford Trouba.

Trouba is pacing for over 40 points. His defence is top 15, at worst. He clears 7, easy, and he should. If Doughty can make 11 into his late 30’s, Trouba (the objectively better player right now) can make 7.5 without issue |

Yes. Extend a declining, already overpaid player into his mid 30s at a similar cap hit. |
