I thought a 2 way contract meant that he did not have to clear waivers. |

Two-way contract means a player's AHL salary is different than NHL salary. |

No problem!
Once a player meets a certain criteria (factoring in age, years of service, games played, etc.) it doesn't matter if he's on a two-way deal or not. |

So why would Kulak not play more last year? BArtkowski was getting destroyed in his own end. Playoffs was really bad. |

Ask yourself "why did Chaisson play half the year on the first line?" and you'll have your answer.
Bart starts the year as the #6. Bank on it. |

Hopefully Gulutzen learned a lesson from last year's horrible start. His job isn't to ensure Bart and the other vets are happy, it's to win games. Bartkowski is the best option if everyone else is hurt.

Definitely some loyalty to players the coach had previously coached! There's no place for that at this level. Z
See Chaisson, Englund, Bart, Vey.......
This year better be a different mandate. |

Not sure he is the best option if everyone else is hurt. Would much rather see some farmhands in action! Send him down. |

If I do recall I don't think the Flames had a lot of practice time in the first 1/4 of the season. I think GG wanted Chiasson to succeed at the role and was hoping that they would eventually click. I do recall many calling for his head while the whole debacle was happening.
No excuses this year. And if Bart is starting as 6D his leash had better be damn short. |

Don't think so. Bart was signed to meet the ED requirements & had to be signed for this year. Bank on Bart being in the AHL to start the season if Wotherspoon is signed. Kulak will be #6 or 7. Kylington just might have a camp that wins him that #6 spot. Would love to see Valimaki get a 9 game audition before being sent to the CHL, have Kulak as #7 & I'm sure Wotherspoon or /& Bart will clear waivers. |

I can't see Wotherspoon ever being more than the 7 D. Stoner has his spot. I think TW gets traded this year. |

He actually looked awesome in the playoffs last year. 4pts in 7 games and was a wrecking ball on the ice.
Hah Ive always thought he sucked. Surprised me last year.
Odd no one is offering him a contract, but he did have pretty major surgery after the postseason.
This also may just be to fulfil the requirement for veterans in pre-season games.
Here's him decking a puckless Phaneuf then getting jumped:

That's quite the overreaction. Yes Chiasson probably spent too much time on the top line, but there also wasn't an obvious choice to replace him, and the top line was doing alright. Engelland is a solid bottom pairing dman and a good guy to have in your lineup and dressing room every night. The Flames are probably going to miss him. Bartkowski was whatever, but so was Kulak. There wasn't going to be a major difference either way. Vey was signed to be an AHLer and did quite well for Stockton last year, not sure how that looks bad on Gulutzan. |

"Everyone" included all the guys in the AHL as well. I don't want to see him play a game.

Engelland I agree will be missed but he was being played with Brodie at the beginning even getting more time on the penalty kill than him. Chaisson obvious choice to replace him should have been Bennett, not sure why this hasn't been tried. Vey got time with the big club even time on the pp before being relegated to the A. I'm sure Bartowski was signed because of gg's association with him in Vancouver. So to say this is an overreaction is bull.
Coaches definitely have favourites! |
