Carol Schram: Vancouver Canucks prospect Jordan Subban ready to learn from PK's playoffs The Vancouver Canucks' defense prospect Jordan Subban is off to Nashville to share his brother P.K.'s experience as the Predators get ready to take part in their first-ever Western Conference Final.

Thanks Carol.

It will be interesting to see how Jordan's defensive game has developed since last year's camp.

He also needs to execute better. Seemed like he fanned on passes more than he should.

Thanks Carol! A long and thorough post to cover the past few days, hope youre enjoying it!

That Nashville top 4 is ridiculous. I really didnt think Rinne was going to be good enough but they keep going. Hoping Washington and Anaheim pull off the wins tonight

Agree. Do I think Bo is on a Bergeron pace? Not quite but it will be close. If he had proper support I agree he would be over 60 pts easy. Plus hopefully Green has him on PP1 this year which in theory should bump his points up.

I don't know if Bo will ever reach 70 plus. I think he's around a 65 point player over 82 games. Unless he gets some serious wingers on both sides with a lot of offensive upside.

50 points this season got you into the top 90 nhl for forwards.

Only 16 forwards broke 70 points this year.

5 years ago, 20 forwards broke 70 points

10 years ago 44 forwards broke 70 points.

Shows really where the NHL has gone.

A 65 points NHL center may not be a legit number 1 center but certainly a damn good one.

Kuzma is on the radio crying for the Canucks to trade Tanev because several teams have said they need a RH shooting top four dman. He may have a point.

Although he was also singing the praises of Nashville that they didn't tank to get good, perhaps disregarding they've been building for 20 years and this is their first time in the third round of the playoffs

For the case about against trading Tanev.

Yes, I know most are okay with Van sucking again next season or know they will suck.

Looking at Colorado and seeing How bad they really were this season. Duchene, Mackinnon, Landeskog, Rantanen, Barrie. All that talent with zero defence and no goaltending shows how much good D-men are worth to a team.

Tanev is still Van's best defender. Second most experience behind Edler.

I would see what value Hutton brings if they are planning on giving OJ a shot.

The case for trading Tanev I think heavily outweighs the case for keeping him. Tanev is an above average defender with zero offensive abilities, Gudbranson might not be as good as Tanev but hes good enough to fill in for the next couple seasons while the organization benefits from the trade return for Tanev IMO

By allowing young inexperienced defenders play above their heads? Opposite of what developing is. Defence takes longer to develop then forwards. Take a look at Hutton and Stecher who most think should still be in the AHL. There is a reason why JB hasn't traded Tanev yet and traded for Guds.

Thanks Carol - Very extensive blog today!

I was very disappointed at the Rangers going out last night. I'm going with Anaheim and Washington winning tonight, but that's probably because I need both to win in order to break even in my pool

Hutton - Tanev
OJ/Pedan - Gudbranson

Since Hutton is going to be in the NHL this year let him play with Tanev and he'll be able to learn from him. If OJ makes the team give him sheltered minutes with Gudbranson and I bet you'll see them take off.

I heard that interview. He did say "if they are truly in a rebuild..." quite a bit to make his point about trading Tanev. He also said 4 teams have gone on record saying that they need a top 4 right handed shooting Dman and that offers could rise by draft week. He used "if they are truly in a rebuild..." to make his point about going with Markstrom and not re-signing Miller and no to Rodin.

I dont disagree, but I think you can acquire through trade or FA veterans that can have a comparable impact on the season as Tanev.

If Tanev's value is to be a minute eating, shot suppressing, little offense producting defenseman at $4.45M; I would rather have a prospect/pick and pay Kris Russell (for example) $4m. Will Russell or any other free agent be as good as Tanev at what he does? Definitely not, but is it close enough? I would say so

trade Tanev for a lottery pick and resign EG for a couple years.

Wouldnt even need to be a lottery pick for me, just make the move happen and start building. It sucks they didnt strike while the market was at its highest last year, but take the current market value and make the best deal you can. You cant really start a rebuild when you're hoarding players in their prime/peak value

TSN's Offseason report for Vancouver:

Projected lineup for next season has a Tanev trade to Toronto, with minor additions of Carrick and Leipsic being added to the lineup

Random Hypothetical:

Since Minny is getting screwed by the expansion draft, let's say they call up Benning and offer up Brodin or Dumba for Juolevi, do you do it if you're Jim?

Brodin is 23, Dumba is 22so they fit in with the rebuild. Only problem is that both of them take up an expansion protection slot on the blueline.

If i'm Benning, Im not shopping him around. I'll take calls and tell GM's that it's up to them to "wow" me with an offer.

Kris Russell, the Oilers got for cheap. He is also 29.
Dekeyser got 5 AAV for 6 years
Demers 4.5 for 5 years
Guds 3.35 for 4 years.

I would put Tanev above all of those Dmen. Tanev contract is a very good contract. I would rather keep Tanev until Van has an actual replacement for him. If Tree was still here

Would make no sense to trade Tanev for a player only to trade a player for a D later on. Not going forward in that sense of the matter.
