I'm a coach... just last week my son broke his collarbone... he didn't tell me how bad he hurt till after the game... players are just as much at fault for not saying something. |

And it's gone on in all sports at all levels since the beginning of organized play. This really shouldn't be a surprise and def yes, the player shoulders the responsibility for not speaking up. |

Not only did the team let Sidney Crosby finish the Winter Classic, but he played in the next game only to get obliterated again by Victor Hedman.
Obliterated? C'mon, Ryan. |

Agree 100%. But that's not going to change. Players want to finish games & not let their team mates down - it's natural!
It's up to the coaching staff to limit damage, knowing a player won't want to come off, then he has to have reduced time/responsibility, & to play that player when you know he's not well is the risk that has to be determined by both coach & player (honestly). |

Scotty over rotated the rotating G-Fux rotator & voila, obliteration! Fortunately McCoy got him back. |

My god now Wilson has charts to yell the medical staff how to do their job. Unless its a broken bone injuries usually dont cause the full amount of pain until after game. A torn ligameant can feel like a. dinger until the next morning. Id say thats why they finish the game. But your mission is to turn hockey into little league baseball like all other pro sports so blame craig adams, hess prob the reason shearys hurt. |

Adrenalin and all that is a huge factor when you get injured in a game. Usually you don't feel most of the pain. |

What everyone else has said. The responsibility falls on the players, as they're the only ones who know how the are feeling for sure, unless there is a clear broken/dislocated part of the body. And as some have said, the pain level sometimes changes after the game/day is over. |

If it's a broken bone it may not show up on initial x-ray. It's only after it is moved by the tendons and muscles it is pulled apart and you can tell the next day. Some players/people don't feel a lot of pain right away. I think since Sid's injury they have a better concussion protocol. I think they could be more cautious, however I am ess certain it would improve recovery time. |

I can understand playing through it and toughing it out in game 3 of a playoff series.
Its a bit harder to understand when its game 18 of the regular season.
That said, as an athlete, You NEVER want to come out of a game. Hockey players are notorious for playing through injuries that most other athletes would not.
Ryan, I dont know if there is a way to track this, but I wonder if the same thing is happening with other organizations? IF it is, then its a hockey culture thing, not something specific to the Penguins. If it is not happening in other organizations, then maybe the Pens need to take a long hard look at how they handle workload when someone gets nicked in a game. |

With all the adrenaline talk etc.
Doesn't it seem like we suffer this problem more than other teams. Maybe its just an eye test, but I do not remember this issue presenting itself in any other team I follow. It happens, but not as consistently. |

I can see guys not wanting to be taken out for fear of losing their spot on a line. There is a lot of competition within the ranks on the pens right now. |

I'm telling you research shows some people have a high pain tolerance and don't feel it the way we think people should. Pain is a perception, it is not just an automatic response like some people think it is. Hockey players are regularly subjected to pain and this also helps to develop a 'tolerance' for pain.

Non issue imo. Athletes play through pain from a very young age and there's no evidence here to suggest finishing the game made the injury worse. |

Shouldn't apply to crosby/letang.
Sheary yes he could lose top 6 job with crosby.
Defenseman I'd go with a no. We really don't have anything at 7d.

Playing thru an injury can 100% cause it to go from a day-to-day sprain into some kind of torn ligament etc. We don't have evidence these specific cases caused bigger injuries, but its a huge possibility. |

Anyway...
Who takes Sheary's spot? I'd like to see Wilson get another shot with Sid. Didn't seem like Hags was a good fit and I think Kunitz needs to stay put on the 4th. |

Look at it this way, how many of the nightly players are on the roster and on the lines that they are because they stepped in after an injury?
That fear is always there for those mid-lower level players on the squad. |
