Hey Lucas!

How's it going man? I've been so busy this summer, I think this is the 1st time I've posted in a few months!

So I have a few questions I was hoping to get some advice for. I just joined a friends keeper league, took over a team, and I have the 1st overall pick. I am wondering on your thoughts on what I should do with the pick. Obviously, I would love to take Matthews, but on the other hand, Victor Hedman is also available via the draft. Does it make more sense to take Matthews and let him develop, or take Hedman who I know is a beast already? You can keep guys on your bench for as long as you want, but once they get put into a roster spot, they are there for a set amount of years. The max being 5 years, but that is currently being used on Hall. Also, I have Letang and Subban on d, with Trouba in the wings. I also have Eichel and Marner waiting on the bench as well.

Also, my league that I run myself has just switched over to a point based system. Goals (G) 3
Assists (A) 2
Plus/Minus (+/-) 0.5
Powerplay Points (PPP) 1
Shorthanded Points (SHP) 2
Shots on Goal (SOG) 0.3
Hits (HIT) 0.2
Blocks (BLK) 0.1
Goaltenders Stat Category Value
Wins (W) 4
Losses (L) -2
Goals Against (GA) -1
Saves (SV) 0.25
Shutouts (SHO) 3

I am wondering what is the best way to draft for this season, as I have never done point based before. Should I focus on getting 2 solid goalies to start right away?

Thanks for the help!

Hey Matt,

Glad you are embarking on a keeper team rebuild. I did that last summer, and it's been great fun.

What goalies do you have right now?

I would 100% draft Matthews as I'd imagine you taking over a team, have no chance of winnning this year.

so build for the future....matthews, marner, eichel is one hell of a starting point!

+ you are a Leafs fan, that there is the icing on the cake. Hedman is great, super good D man all round, but, and a big but....Matthews for 5 years of his prime could be that much better than Hedman now.

Ok Lucas (and whoever else has an opinion), I have a question:

In my keeper league, I have 3 goalies.....Rinne, Gibson and Luongo. How would you rank them in terms of who I should keep most?

Gibson
Rinne
Luongo

(I think Lu is a bit banged up right now too) - may see Reimer start the season for FLA, not 100%.

Gibson - young, legit #1 now that Andersen is gone - ANA is still a great team.
Rinne - had off season last year, but was unreal the year before...I expect he does better this year, but not as 'worthy' as Gibson at this point IMO.
Lu- still good, but may slowly start to fade with injuries and age.

Hey Lucas,

My league is a straight points league (goals and assists). Could you prepare predictions based strictly on points as well?

Howdy,

Points only - shouldn't be an issue - let me get these initial lists done then I can go from there.

cheers, thanks for chiming in!

my goalies are andersen, ward, mrazek, and fucale. mrazek is my goalie of the future as it currently seems.

what do you think i could get if i trade subban at the draft?

Andersen (TOR) ?

if so, he and Mrazek are a good going forward if you ask me.

trading Subban?

what do you need to improve your roster if you were to trade Subban...all depends what u need mostly!@

i need better defensive prospects. this guy didn't do so well with drafting d. i need some offensive d coming up. i want to try and draft jake bean for sure.

do you think it's smart to only take prospects in the draft?

I need some advice. Im in a keeper league and I have the 7th overall pick as well as the 10th. My only goalie is Elliott. Should I use my 7th overall to pick up Jones? (Assuming laine and Matthew's will be gone) or hold off and stick with a forward or a D? Matt Murray is also available, im just not sold on him yet. TIA

if your team is competitive than I would take a quality D man who is playing now (if available), if you have a ways to go in terms of being in the top 3, then I would draft for the future.

There could be some 19-21 year old kids like Honka, Provorov who are available - and I think both have a good shot at making their clubs this year (mind you, they might not be starting with tons of minutes and PP opportunity's) - but guys like that for example.

Jones is a great pickup for quality goaltending - Murray I think is a great option as well, but I do see your concern...(could be an amazing keeper goalie though).

Perhaps see who is available with your 7th overall, and if you see a F or D you really like, you could grab them and go for Murray or Jones with your 10th overall.
