Can someone explain the "tragic #" in the playoff race chart to me?

I assume the tragic number is the opposite of magic number in baseball. That would be how many points that team needs to lose to be eliminated.

What was up with the Phil and the PP last night? Was he demoted or did they sell it to him as having his own PP unit?

I like that idea of a 2 minute penalty being 2 minutes regardless of if the other team scores. Guys are ok with taking 2 minute penalties at times if the situation is right. Make it sting a little bit more.

Im also ok with removing the icing too, although I wouldnt advocate for both at the same time. A penalty should hurt the team and make them think twice about breaking the rules. Of course, maybe if refs just called things the right way and didnt try to police the game, alot of this could be a non issue.

Id say no to changing the size of the nets. Goalies are getting bigger, but the problem is the size of their pads and jersey. That needs to be regulated. Considering all equipment is now bullet proof, why does it need to be so large?

Expansion draft potential. Each team has option of protecting 3d, 7F and I goalie or 8 skaters +1 goalie. Expansion determined before draft

this just pisses me off. We protect Letang, Maatta, and Dumoulin I would guess? So we could lose Pouliot, Daley, Schultz, Lovejoy, or Cole for nothing.

So... 1 or 2 teams. And they are ONLY going to pick our defensemen?

Also doesn't apply to the 17-18 year at the earliest.

This is what Bettman said in December, that it could raise by 3 mill, yet someone from these parts said he was only saying it to make it look good...

Obviously, if it raises this much its excellent news for the Pens.

In the past you also did not have to expose players under a certain age.

The Flyers tragic number is 27 and they have 14 games left so a possible 28 points they can obtain and they're outside the playoff picture currently. Im not seeing how that adds up...

EDIT: I want to think that because theyre one point out of playoffs currently. If they happened to lose out on 27th of those 28 points theres no way they could make it in but thats not the case, for example they could only get 10 (lose the other 17) points and the red wings get 8 points and they'd still make it in.

I think that only applies to players on their ELC. But might allow those who didn't get any of the ELC shortened by playing too much and our on their final year of it.

Looks like just 1 team is most likely. So we only lose one player, and I figured theyd probably rather take our 4D instead of a our 7th F.

First and second year pros are exempt, but by that time, Pouliot will not be exempt. I figure the Vegas Virgins would rather take Pouliot or Dumoulin from us than Bonino or whoever.

Edit: come to think of it....they could even take Matt Murray!!!

I wouldnt read too much into that. 74 million is most likely including the player esculator. I dont think they go for that this year. Wouldnt be shocked if it was flat or dropped slightly

I don't think the NHL was going to let the cap go down. Bettman said there were safe guards in place and was pretty confident about the cap raising 3 mil.

Well that raise goes a long way to covering the Maatta extension. Factor in the contracts that are off the books too and we have wiggle room.

Relax. The more depressing thing is potentially losing Murray for nothing. Schultz is probably gone at the end of this season. We will lose him for nothing, unless something strange happens. Lovejoy or Cole ... no biggie. Lovejoy is a pending ufa.

The NHL essentially wants its expansion teams, whenever it happens to be competitive out of the gate and not struggle as much as Ottawa, SJ and all the others.

So with the cap at 74M, the Pens will have 13 forwards (including Simon), 6 d-men, and 2 goalies under contract, and still have 3.8M in cap space.

That helps for sure. It not going down.

I think it would be prudent to set the cap for the following season before the trade deadline. I'm willing to bet many moves weren't made because of the cap fear of going down.
