Very interesting non-Penguins related piece. All we can do as Pens fans is shut up and wait to see what kind of moves the organization makes at the draft. Pieces like this is what we need to hold us over until then, or else we're stuck ground hog daying trade proposals. |

desperate times call for desperate measures.
Even if this is some how made law, guys will simply flee at night like Malkin did and make it here.
Young guys will always have the dream of playing in the NHL and will do whatever they have to to make it here... the only question is how much danger will the Russian government put them in to try to keep them in Russia. |

Best news I've heard all summer. Now get rid of instigating penalty and the visor rule and we might actually see some hockey again. |

First off, nice write-up, Gunner.
Lastly, and the most egregious thing about this whole situation is Slava Fetisov himself. Slava Fetisov famously fought against the Soviet government to allow him a work visa to play in the NHL. This fight is well documented in the insanely good ESPN 30 for 30 piece "Of Miracles and Men".
The documentary painted Fetisov as a sympathetic character who was being oppressed by an overbearing government. Eventually Fetisov was granted his visa and went on to have great success in the NHL. His success opened the flood gates for many great Russian players to come over and play in the NHL.
I gained a ton of respect for Fetisov as a person (had it for him as a hockey player long ago) after seeing the 30 for 30.
Funny how quickly it can go away. |

The real winners will be the AHL....think of the influx of eligible talent they will get from Russia. |

yep. CHL will benefit too.
maybe this can lead to the stupid CHL-AHL agreement being discontinued. |

Or at least adjusted. People will poop when Canadian Boys lose their spots....so why not amend it so that 18 yr old foreign players can make the Jump to the AHL? |

This would be comical if it weren't so sad. The Ruble is collapsing because Putin wants Russia to regain the glory (LOL) of the Soviet Union and all of those wonderful benefits that go along with communism. Unfortunately for him the single source of their wealth (energy) is taking a serious hit these days.
Communism and the control that goes with it is wonderful for the elite. That's how you know Fetisov has joined that class. Everybody else just needs to shut up and get in the bread lines.

Why would they need sympathy. They only go there when their NHL dream is dead and it's still the best financial option....plus all those cute Ukrainian girls looking for sugar daddy....I'm sure they do ok. |

I like that idea... canada's minor, and EU teams also, but yeah... I could see a near mass exodus from Russian youth players to avoid his BS. |

It's impossible for me to fathom a group of people having everything, and not giving to those that are in need. I know that's sounding corny, but people just suck when they're tempted by something. That said, I'd bet there's more to the story with Fetisov....I mean, he cant be that stupid.

Sure...because if your dream is dead at 22 or 23 you can always go back to Russia and give it a shot. |

I don't want to get in a political discussion...but that's the common principles of greed....and it happens everywhere. |
