Nice write up gunner, excited for Dumoulin I think he can be a real asset but how many defensemen are we gonna keep ? At some point something has to give. Is the game today televised anywhere ?

That is encouraging in regards to Dumoulin. I know it was a very short sample size but I wasn't all that impressed with his time with the Pens last year.

I think we are all assuming that Martin will be gone after this season and we will certainly be calling upon a youngster like Dumo or Pouliot or Harrington to step up. If we retain Ehrhoff for a few more years, I would definitely be comfortable trading one of our blue-chippers for forward help.

On the forward side, its nice to see some skilled players in the mix, even if they're long shots. If we can get a an NHL regular out of late round picks/FA signings Zlobin/Dea/Sheary....or even if Kuhnhackl somehow lives up to his potential....that'd be huge for us going forward.

The style of play with great possession is what I see as the most encouraging aspect.

I agree, I was at the game yesterday in London and it was impossible not to notice how dominant Doumolin was in the game. Everything ran through him and the rest of the team looked to him to control the play. He was literally like a general. There were a few time he skated, head up, the length of the ice right down the middle and stick handled around 2 or 3 defenders. And I had to note what an excellent complimentary player Ried McNeil was to Doumolin. McNeil is a much faster skater than I was previously aware and every 50/50 puck was his. The other guy that dominated in his own way was Scott Harrington. Always in the right position, always made the right decision. First unit penalty killer, second unit pp. Matt Murray let in a couple bad goals but they were more from rust than anything else. He dominated the third period and had a couple unbelievable saves to keep them in it. The other guy that stood out was Adam Payrl, anything the team needed from him he gave them, He has a lot more skill than I thought and was a constant policing type force when the game got a little bit chippy. If he can grow a little more as a player I think he could be a top 6 player for this team.

And I forgot about Oskar Sundquist. He's huge and plays with a bit of an edge or a nastiness. He's fast and strong and skilled. If he learns a little more control and makes better decisions with the puck he could be very special.

If you look closely, you can see it isn't a real train.

It would be great if Dumoulin made Scuderi expendable. Then we'd just have to find a sucker who will give us actual assets for him.

I'd just be happy to find someone that would take Scuderi regardless of what we got in return. Anything to get him off the books.

You can't waste assets like that though. He's at his lowest value now, we need a sucker or to wait until he has played a month or two of ok hockey before we trade him.

Due to his contract amount, it would be EXTREMLY hard to find anyone wanting to take him straight up... would likely have to give up a lower round pick in my opinion.

Then he won't get traded. Simple as that.

Maybe its because I've been hockey deprived for too long, but Dea and Zlobin are starting to change my mind about them. Gotta remember to keep my hopes down.

Whos the highest pick among forwards in this tourney? I guess there are a couple of 3rd rounders but mostly everyone else was drafted 4-7 or undrafted....

trying to temper my expectations as well...

Eh, if I could trade him, retaining none of his salary, and a 5th and get a 7th round pick, or even nothing, I'd do it. Free up roughly 2.5 mil (assuming one of our rookies comes up to take his spot) for whatever, at the cost of a 5th.

In the new year, he might be worth a 2nd or a middling prospect. Or part of a deal for a top 6er. Do you still do it?

Well, since he will NEVER be worth that much, even with playing "magic crystal ball to the future" I still do my trade.

As long as he'd gone at some point this year, that's fine by me. I think it is important to have that cap space for the TDL this year.

Unless we plan to do a blockbuster type trade with money going out (ex. Martin)...having Scuderi off the books gives us the flexibility to pick up any pieces we may need. (Yes, I'm over the Ray Shero TDL moves, but I'd be ok trading a 3rd rounder and up for roster help if we need it)

He would get a middling prospect if he were a rental. No contender wants that salary for 2 years....

I'd say give him sheltered minutes and hope this new system can help his game a bit. Then by the deadline hopefully a team needs some sort of defensive help and you send him there for a 7th rounder
