I'd love to know Ehrhoff's Break Up % as well
Our D looks solid. As long as you keep Scuderi off Letang's back we'll be fine.
Despres and Määttä should be key pieces for us. If they don't make tons of mistakes we'll be very very good. |

He had 201 targets so his sample size is on the larger end when compared to some of the other players on the chart. |

Gunner, one more thing. I thought the Bortuzzo/Despres pairing did fairly well at times last season. Are there any stats that show how they did playing with each other? We could focus on finding the best 3rd pairing duo considering the stats. (Bortuzzo-Despres, Scuderi-Despres, Bortuzzo-Scuderi) |

I can look up the numbers but I think it is safe to say that Bortuzzo-Despres would be the most ideal pairing. Scuderi's numbers have been abysmal every single time I do an exercise like this. |

Thanks. Very good. He'd be the 2nd best at it on our team.
So we have a better version of Niskanen.
Ehrhoff: 54.2% and 13.4%. |

Without looking at any numbers of fancy stats, it was clear that Scuderi was the Penguins worst full-time defender last year, even more so than Engelland. What happened? It seemed like his game just dropped off a steep cliff as opposed toa steady decline. Did he have some bad injury he never recovered from? Just curious. |

Ehrhoff is a definite all-around upgrade to Niskanen, all things equal. |

He actually had an injury. I think it was a broken leg or ankle. Something like this. He never fully recovered.
We cannot leave out the fact that he's getting there in age too.
Anyway, he should be better (has to!) next season. |

I'm stupid, is the carry % how frequently the opponent carries in vs. dump in? |

Yes. - Ryan_Wilson
So is Scuderi a master of carrying the puck? I thought most people were complaining on how Scuderi would dump in the puck most of the time. |
|
|
|
Yes. - Ryan_Wilson
Ok, and then break-up percentage is accounted for after the opponent crosses the blue line? Or do you count break-ups in the NZ? |

This chart isn't about the Penguins carrying the puck. It is about the opponents ability to carry it in vs them. |

Great write-up! I understand this one and it's damning for Scuderi. Even with the small sample size stats have to start someone. |

So trying to come to a conclusion using some averages/round numbers....
Lets say average NHL carry-in pct is 50% and break-up % is 10%. That would mean only 5% of all zone entries are carried in and broken up by a defender. Seems strange to me. |

Sidenote: Letang, Martin, Ehrhoff, Maatta can rival any top 4 in the league IMO. I really think they will be dynamic and have enough skill to be effective in both zones. The only concern I have is that no one can really clear the front of the net. Maybe Bortuzzo & Despres can do that a little bit down on the bottom pairing. But I'll take my chances with the skilled guys and sacrifice clearing the front of the net.

Along the same lines as the last comment: Agnew is the PK guy right? I hope he changes the strategy of leaving one opponent wide open right in front of Fleury to screen him. (thinking it was better to have one guy in front of the goalie rather than a bunch of guys jostling around and impeding vision).
That was a strategy that sounded good on paper but just never worked. |

Are dump ins differentiated in these stats?
Not all dumps are created equal. |

@ShutdownLine @GunnerStaal Only if they clearly disrupt or break-up a zone entry while guarding the blue line. |

Ah okay, so I guess that makes sense. That makes me think guys like Sid and Geno just need to carry the puck in the zone, never dump, and try one on one more often....chances they will gain zone entry are much higher than I thought. |
