Sidney Crosby was the best player in the NHL in the 2012-13 season. - Ryan_Wilson
I agree, but that's not the basis of the Hart Trophy. |

I think it should have gone to Tavares. He was the ONLY reason the isles were relevant that season. Single handedly made them a playoff team. He was the most valuable player to his team. |

I get an error everytime I hit "reply" ..not sure if anyone else is having these issues.
Anway...I never realized that Ovechkin is the same height as Malkin and Ovie is 35 pounds heavier. I don't think Ovie looked nearly that big.
My definition of the Hart Trophy is basically saying..look back at the last season and you can choose any one player in the league to be on your team. And I can't think of a single season I wouldn't choose a (healthy) Crosby.

Yeah, the site is broken. Happening all over the threads.
That's a fine definition, but usually, you'd want to pick a player for a playoff team, as the "played judged most valuable to his team" should be a playoff team. Otherwise, his value isn't good enough except to get them further back from a high pick. Granted, this wouldn't be an issue here, but just a caveat. And I agree that Crosby probably should have won it, but not because on zone starts and/or possession time. |

That puck doesn't meet Sid's jaw, he wins MVP that season hands down.
I do tend to believe that you cant miss that much time and be considered MVP so I understand the voting approach that most people appeared to have taken.
As a Pens fan, I actually had no issue with how the MVP played out this particular season.
Bad luck for Sid. Pure and simple. |

Good point.
You know...at some point we will be talking about new names here. Stamkos, Tavares, Mackinnon, McDavid, etc....once they hit their primes, they may be pushing out guys like Crosby and Ovie and Geno for these types of awards.
With the new draft lottery format, you would have to think teams are going to hang on to their 1st round picks more than ever. You could technically have a team like Detroit or the Caps miss the playoffs by one or two points and end up with the first overall pick.
So now the Pens next trade, they can package their own first round pick + player X for a non contender's first round pick...and then we end up winning the lottery again and get McDavid. Ok, wow, that's a reach....we need hockey soon :-) |

I guess using the same deductions the Pens should have won the Cup the last 5 years but the rest of the league held it against them(and beat them) because their players kept getting hurt....considering the Pens have the two best players and the best defenseman in the game(according to Pitt media) they should just be handed the trophy...
that's why they play the games on the ice and not on NHL14 video game

I'm not sold on McDavid, to be honest. Is he good? Yes. Is he a surefire HOFer? Not really. Only time will tell. Same with MacKinnon. He was the clear-cut Calder winner, but this was actually a relatively quiet rookie year.
I think the ship has sailed on Ovechkin. As long as Stamkos stays healthy, OV will never push him for the Hart, as Stamkos is way more of a complete player. Tavares will need a better supporting cast to ever win a Hart, as the Isles have too many holes for any player to pull into contention.
I know it's a kids' game more now than ever, but I still think that guys like Crosby and Stamkos will be the measuring stick every year for about a decade or so. |

But the fact he was so young. Like he isn't even 19 yet. MAckinnon I do not think will be on the same level as crosby. However, I look at him more on the comparason as Toews. Just super clutch and does whatever he can to win the game. |

You are using deductions surrounding individual players for a team based award. Individual players can dominate and the team not succeed. You should know that as a fan of the Flyers. Lindros and Giroux have both been dominant for the Flyers, but the team still hasn't won anything since Love Will Keep Us Together by Captain & Tenille was the billboard #1 song. |

To be fair, they have won several "things." A number of conference/division championships, and some off-ice accolades. They haven't won a Stanley Cup since 1975. And the #1 at that point was actually "Shining Star" by Earth, Wind, and Fire. |

I went with the number one song between June 21 and July 12. I should have gone with May. Dammit.

Is this whole board gonna be on suicide watch if/when the Flyers win a Stanley Cup? I never got the undying hatred for all things Philadelphia-related that seems to be shared by everyone from Pittsburgh. I can guarantee you it doesn't go both ways (we hate New York and Boston much more). |

JT should have won it he carried that team on his back to make the playoffs. All the advanced stats I would still appreciate if gunner didn't act like plus minus didn't exist. As far as mcdavid the kid hasnt even played a gm in the show. Not saying he wont be good but something tells me he is like joe Thornton. He never shoots he will have 12 g 90 a. And" joe should shut his mouth, he may go down in history as one of the better players in the gm to never win anything"
