Carol Schram: Vancouver Canucks: Canada Falls to France, Would Benning Choose Vancouver? As Canada opens the 2014 World Championships with a shootout loss to France, the rumour mill continues to swirl as speculation mounts that Jim Benning will become the next general manager of the Vancouver Canucks.

Sounds like it's Benning or bust.

I like busts. Juicy firm ones are fun.

The only place I want to see Naslund with the Canucks is if he is selling peanuts and Cracker Jack in the aisles at Rogers Arena.

I wonder who Linden has on his "list"? Obviously Benning is one of them and reportedly Michael Futa is another. Gotta be more than that though...isn't there?

I'm certainly ok with the Bruins drafting over the period of 2006 to 2011, IMO it's too early to judge 2012 & 2013. It's been said that if a team comes out with one NHL player from a draft they've done well, if they manage two, they've done extremely well. I'm sure they've had some miss's, like every NHL team, but they've put some very good young players in the league from 2006 onward and seem to have more in waiting.

Carol - it should also be noted, they (along with every other NHL team) have a better record than the Canucks when it comes to drafting since 2006. Name a candidate who's got a better draft record than Benning?

With a little luck in this draft we could end up with the next Bob Dailey.

You can’t blame Benning on the drafting; however you can question the scouting team responsible. I won’t even talk about Mike Gillis’s ‘’Bold trades’’ our lack of depth is why we are here today.

Why would Benning come here? A good relationship with Trevor Linden who has a relationship with his current boss Can Neely, future trading partners? Why not!

Would Neely be interested in having Benning in his own Conference or in the less threatening west? Let’s get this ball rolling!

Benning also did very well scouting in Buffalo(something I overlooked before digging a bit deeper into his history). Made some very impressive picks, even outside of the first round for the Sabres. And like you say, the Canucks can't do much worse.

"According to the Free Press's Helene St. James, TSN's Darren Dreger's Tweet suggesting that Tom Renney is in fact a hot coaching commodity may be true, and instead of the, "Babcock must want to make a change by leaving Detroit" line holding water, perhaps Jeff Blashill might rejoin Babcock to add a "new voice" instead. Why?

Well, here's St. James bit of news:

The Detroit Red Wings have granted permission for NHL clubs to talk to assistant coaches Tom Renney and Bill Peters.

General manager Ken Holland said Friday he's received "a couple of calls" from colleagues looking to hire head coaches, but would not name the teams. NHL clubs with head coaching vacancies number Carolina, Florida, Vancouver and Washington.

Renney has a year left on his associate coach contract with the Wings, while Peters, an assistant, has two months left on his contract."

You will accept Renney into this dysfunctional family and you will like it.

No kidding. I plopped it on here for conversation. You do wonder if anyone really is interested in either of their services or just kicking the tires.

IA team full of 22 Chris Kunitz's just wouldn't be fair. Just too much chemistry to overcome.

With Edlers value going down I was looking at Washington seeing they are probably going to want some change.

Edler 5 mil per 4 years remaining

Joel Ward 33 yrs old 24 goals 1 year left at 3 mil per and Eric Fehr 28 years old 6'4RHW 1.5 mil, 13 goals this year. Both are UFAs after next year.

That would mean a trade up. Do we have the pieces to do it and would it not be an overpayment?
