Tavares should be signing for league minimum at this point. 88 million dollars in base salary from the Leafs over the last 8 years should be more than enough for him, his children, and his children's children. If he truly wants to win then he should take a league minimum deal in order to maximize the Leafs cap space to bring in talent. I'm sure the Leafs can offer him a sweetheart front office job when his career is done, if he so chooses.

If not, well there's some more DNA change that Treliving talked about.

Stop with the loyalty bullpoop. Why is loyalty just about players agreeing to take less than what they could get elsewhere? Completely his call if he wants to stay and take less or make more somewhere else.

I can't help but wonder if the Leafs will co cheap, short-term UFA signings this year with a focus on having us much cap space as possible for the "Summer of McJesus" next year.

Definitely a risk that could blow up in their face if he signs elsewhere, but I can see them rolling the dice on it.
