So, the Leafs want to catch the Panthers in playoff success.

Panthers added Jones as their #1 D and Brad Marchand as 3rd line winger leading into the deadline. They are resigning Bennett and will allow Ekblad to walk.

What am I missing? The idea that the Leafs can let Marner walk and replace Reilly with Ekblad and improve on their chances to defeat Florida in the playoffs sounds ludicrous.

Does anybody actually believe the Leafs will be an improved team next season?

And the Sabres continue to be the Sabres. They are just like the gang that can't shoot straight. Why wouldn't they trade their best bargaining chip for more? How about flipping the first round picks as part of the deal? How about sending Peterka to the Rangers for Lafreniere ? Maybe GMKA trades Byram for a 4th rounder a couple of potted palm trees! JARMO HELP US PLEASE!!!!!!!!

hmm, hearing Chicago may be open to dealing #3. I presume they want to get better quickly, and perhaps there is a deal to be made with PIT. Thoughts on this:

#3 + #25 to PIT for Karlsson (50% retained) + Rakell + #11

Chicago desparately needs a guy who can run the PP from the back end as well as somebody skilled with experience who can play with Bedard...this does both in under $11M. Given this year's draft is not considered very deep the #25 is basically a high second rounder in a better draft year - although likely #34 would also work for PIT.

Of course, Karlsson would have to waive...let's assume he is willing to do so. Otherwise, how about:

#3 to PIT for #11 + Rakell (+2nd rnd pick or prospect)

At $5mil per season, and he can still give you 60+pts and run the PP...without so much salary retained, yeah, not much value.
