I just want this to end either way. If he isnt fully committed, go find the guy who is. If FSG knows something we dont or they are extremely patient. |

These are my feelings. It's possible however he's already taken the job and they're lining up some other moves. No way of knowing.
It's a tough job ahead, but I don't want somebody who needs a lot of coaxing. Regret will seep in real quick if/when problems arise. |

I am ok with them thinking Dubas is their guy, even if I don't agree. I am ok with Dubas needing to take some time to make a decision. But I don't understand how he has earned this apparent leverage to keep the Pens on hold after they gave him a significant amount of time to make a decision.
I think Dubas is playing a game just like Tavares did to him. Thats why he made his statement that he would take time off if he did not return to the Leafs. That was purely to create false competition (the choice not to work is a form of competition) and boost his appeal. He is probably trying to max his salary and bring in his guys on favorable salaries as well.
I am honestly baffled as to why he is the hot commodity when he has a pretty questionable track record. The Pens are just far and away the best fit for him, he has good, cheap 1C, 2C and 1D in place (he has been terrible with contracts). They need a gunslinger to mix things up with trades, something he has been decent at. If he wants to stick it to the Leafs, the Pens have the best chance of going from missing the playoffs to competing for a cup of any team looking for a GM.

We really don't know what type of input Shanahan had on the roster (if any) and any idea of it is likely speculation. These are things that could have come out in the interview with FSG. What influence Shanny had, and what Dubas thought of how the influence affected Dubas's decisions with the Leafs roster, etc.
Could be the reason he's asking for full control (if he is) is because he doesn't want to run into that issue again.

@Boyd
FSG had a great candidate list from what was reported. If Dubas is their guy, which it looks like he is, I am optimistic that his interviews lead FSG to believe there’s a lot of untapped potential with him if given full control of hockey ops. A guy as young as Dubas who was pretty good though flawed in one of the biggest chairs in the league is very attractive if you have reason to believe he can go from pretty good to great. |

Either way, the ability of FSG to keep this kind of stuff largely quiet is impressive. Under the old regime, you'd have daily leaks to all types of reporters. FSG flies under the radar and I like that. |

I totally agree with you. All GMs will always be flawed as well, even Yzerman made some questionable moves while in Tampa. Brisebois has too, and he's looked at as a great GM due to the cups won, but not every move as worked out.

I never understood the importance of leaks during negotiations. People always say that it’s leverage and posturing but are decision makers really reading beat writers and being like “(frank) I didn’t know he might not be that interested, we need to up the offer!” I assume all this leverage play stuff is communicated face to face. |

Who knows, GMJR ready my Hockeybuzz message board post in 2015 about acquiring Kessel and then they traded for Phil and won 2 cups. Maybe they do scour the blog and beat world.

Exactly. The local reporters have largely been left in the dark. Yohe and Rossi are posting more gossip than rumors, Kingerski and Molinari are posting scraps/leftovers from the national media, Haase at least had the scoop on Crosby/Dubas meeting... but most of the few details about Dubas has come from Friedman. And I could see that coming from Dubas's camp moreso than FSG. I doubt FSG even knows who Elliotte Friedman is

Steigy was just on the radio. They brought up the Tavares deal. Steigy said it was his understanding that Shanny was behind giving him that deal and Dubas didn't want to do it. TIFWIW.

That makes a lot of sense. It felt like a "hockey guy" decision and not a nerd move. |

I dont know man, at the time Tavares was the biggest UFA in recent years and one of the best centers in the league. He was a perennial 30/35 goal scorer, close to PPG player or more every season, and great in both ends of ice. The Islanders were offering him the same amount to stay that he received from the Leafs and I believe it was understood quite a few other teams wanted him and were willing to give just as much or more. He had 47 goals for the Leafs in his first season with them. He's had some real sh!tty injury luck since joining them as well. I don't think Tavares is near as bad as people like to say he is, even for his price tag. |
