Mike Augello: Are The Leafs Looking Towards Hawks For Deadline Help?

I follow the Hawks. Domi and Lafferty could help a playoff team and not be too costly. No more than a 2nd. McCabe…maybe for a 2nd. Athanasiou, Johnson(s), and Murphy no help. Toews would be a good 3c and insurance if there is an injury if he could be had at the right price with a 3rd team taking 1/4 of his cap hit. Kane is playing injured very risky.

Don’t know much about these players but I don’t think the main criteria should be “but they’re cheap”. If he’s good and will help win a Cup, go get him.

What’s the issue with Kane? Can you sit him and have him healed up for playoffs? Is he on ltir? Can leafs kucherov him?

The easy mental exercise is to always talk about the cheap option because of the Leafs Cap issue or Dubas' unwillingness to trade pending UFAs to open up space.

One of those things can't change...the Cap issue, hopefully the other one will.

I'm not talking about major pieces, just dump one of the non-playoff, cheaper and soft forward types in the bottom six and/or one of the redundantly soft defensemen plus Muzz's LTIR. Send Anderson to the AHL.

Dubus could easily add by subtraction and then add by addition to the tune of $10M, ~$3m winger like Domi for 2LW, ~$1-2m LW for the bottom 6, and up to a $5m D man.

We can’t assume Kerfoot is going to go. If he wants to stay he could easily have picked teams that Leafs were likely to trade him to as part of his NTC list.

If you think that the team has a good chance to win, then you swing for the fences with a trade at the deadline. I don’t get this picking up a decent player for a run. Get a great player!

I just hope Dubas has full reigns to do whatever he wants knowing he might not have a contract next year.

For what it’s worth I still think he should get a new contract no matter what happens this playoffs. Unless he does nothing at the deadline.

Wouldn't mind the Buds bringing back Luke Schenn at the deadline. Could be had for cheap. Will solidify the bottom pairing and in a tough Tampa series would probably be more effective than Sandin. Would the Leafs move Sandin plus middle round pick for Rathbone and Schenn?

Mitchy has like 5 assists so far in this game…watch him forget to shoot in real hockey.

Lafferty and McCabe could be nice to add to our depth. Lafferty hits and isn't afraid to fight either. McCabe also isn't afraid to drop the gloves. Adds some toughness to the team. Would be nice to add another bottom 6 forward who can play and hit, barbashev or acciari ideally. Adding 2 guys to the bottom 6 seems like the most important thing this team needs.

I dont want him to do whatever he wants if he doesnt have a guaranteed contract, that could really screw the leafs long term.
Hoping he already knows he will be staying and if not, hoping he doesn't have free reign to do whatever
