I really came to like Mike Matheson. I also have a high opinion of Petry despite his struggles last season. Would I have exchanged Marino for him? No, but I do think if Letang goes down Petry has a much better skill set to take the 1RD role than Marino does so in that sense i don’t think this trade off is an unmitigated disaster from an on ice perspective. The main problem is that we have holes in the top 9 and this increase in cap basically closes the door on addressing them.

I could also really see petry excelling behind Letang vs on the top pair. |

In a nutshell…
In: Petry
Smith
Poehling
3rd Rounder
Out: Matheson
Marino
4th Rounder
We STILL have 9 defensemen. That preseason issue and the quality forward depth issue are still not solved. That’s ok, because there is still time. Petry will be a fit, and him logging second pairing minutes is not a bad thing for him or us. You could do worse than Petry. There have to be more moves made. I’m interested in seeing the full plan. I have a feeling the rest of summer is gonna be fun |

Mad about Matheson gone. We lost a lot of quality now. He was a great skater. |

I didn't want to lose Math at all. However, if this happened last summer I'd be totally fine with losing him hahah. If it was Dumo gone today I think our D is very, very good... Would of been
Petts-Tanger
Math-Petry
POJ/Smith- Rutta
Friedman-Rudy
This little exercise makes it pretty evident another D has to go haha |

He knows how good Matheson is. They both practice together in the offseason. |

What a day! What's next Hex? I guess this shows he has some faith in Pettersson and Dumo. It does potentially allow us to let Dumo walk after the season. Smith brings some youth and Petry much like many have said will be a nice 2nd pairing net front clearing player which we need. Plus he does have a solid shot. We also have some cap room left to make a move |

I think MM is a loss. I just don’t see how a team that’s tanking to rebuild and the fact everyone knows petry demanded a trade out of mtl we should of got some money held back. And the rutta trade seems stupid now.
Dumo is a big concern and as someone said he should prob be a 3rd pairing guy going forward. Hopefully he has healed up and looks better but he has consistently looked worse every year since his ankle surgery. |

Hextall said their biggest issue had been the cap, "and it's s a little closer to being compliant now, so certainly feel a little bit better about it than I did the other day." Said they like the nine D-men they now have in the fold, so they won't necessarily make another move.

I think Dumo could be a solid option with Petry on the 2nd pairing. Give him less minutes. I am disappointed about Matheson, but he did have some lapses at times he also had a lengthy contract. I am hoping Petry kills it for us next season which I think he will on the 2nd pairing. |

These moves have locked Dumo in on the 1st pairing. |

So much to digest here.
If Petry bounces back, he makes this team better short term. A lot riskier than Marino, but more upside.
Dumo would have been my choice to trade. I didn't have a lot of confidence that Matheson would continue his upswing so I don't mind getting away from him at all. Others I know feel differently.
Ruuta will probably always be not considered worth the money over Ruhwedel. They said they wanted a bigger body PK defenseman and they got him. Has quite a bit of experience moving up the line up when needed.
There is now a clear opening for a young LHD and some competition. No secret I like POJ, but I think he is more a Marino type who can move the puck and play a lot of minutes, but isn't going to give you a lot of offense.
Smith on the other hand was just a couple years ago one of the top offensive defense prospects in the game, had a decent rookie year, and a horrible second year. There's potential and he can go to WBS to clear the logjam if needed this year.
I like Poehling as a change of scenery lottery ticket. 22, years old, former 1st 17 points in 57 games in 12 minutes a game. Maybe nothing, but more interesting then most of the guys we have. |

Poehling has an interesting scouting report from the Athletic. Essentially started in the AHL and once he made it to the team he exceeded expectations

Hey Ronnie! I hear you have NINE defensemen signed! Out here in Anaheim, they've got 4 signed and still have $10 million to spend just to get to the minimum. How about shipping one or two of them out west and spreading the wealth. |

Dumo Letang
Petts petry
Poj rutta
Smith Ruhw Friedman.
Smith can start in the A. Is prob trade Ruhw since Friedman can play both sides and I like his feistiness. I imagine this is the majority of our moves. Send some depth forwards to the A as well to sign Kap. |

He scored 3 goals in his first game, but since then a big 4th liner with limited offense. |

Yeah I can’t see a Dumo/Petts move because that thrusts POJ into the 2nd pair. Not sure I see Sully playing both POJ and Smith |

He seems pretty blah. Big but not physical. Could barely crack a terrible team if not for all the Injuries. Would rather have him than archibald though. |

He had 9 goals in 57 games playing in the bottom six. Kap had 11 in 79. He is 23 and should do well in a bottom six role. Can potentially add a goal every now and then. |
