Theo Fox: Draft: Day 2 Review
A review of the Blackhawks picks during Day 2 of the NHL Draft where speed, relentlessness, and compete level were the common themes.
Plus, brief thoughts on how Duncan Keith's retirement impacts Chicago's salary cap due to a recapture penalty. |

Congrats to Duncs; Hall of Famer;
So glad he was a Hawk!
It’s clear Davidsons is putting his own stamp on this team, but trading away all your young talent? Sure… you trade some of your assets for picks and prospects but I’m sure any team would luv to have Hagel, ADB and kirby to build around. Now they need to find said players. Hope Kane and Teows want out so that we can gain more picks and assets for next years draft class… |

There was mentioned - call it a murmur perhaps - in the past few days that Davidson would turn over the minor league personnel. Apparently he is dead set on seeing a team wide style with the NHL & AHL teams playing the same way.
Is this going to effect any prospects like Teply?

After reviewing the past two days events in totality, it appears, to me anyway, that the likelihood that any of the players drafted this year are even half as good as the Cat is remote. The Hawks gave up the best player of the day, and have virtually nothing noteworthy to show for it.
Epic Fail.

The Athletic projected this season’s lineup. Debrincat is a huge loss. But if Toews and T Johnson regain just a little, Mrazek stays healthy, and several young players have incremental improvements they could both be bad enough to be in the bottom 3 in the league and yet watchable in a cringeworthy kind of way. Also the Athletic left out Connelly. I think he should get an opportunity to play in the NHL again. |

MRAZEK?????????????? Where’s this headed?
You have to hand it to Chicago’s scouts this years draft picks have a huge upside.

Funny, I was just going to post something about the Rockford roster. Capfriendly shows the Icehogs having only 5 signed forwards with Altybarmakian and Morrison as RFA's. The parent club currently has 13 signed (including Khaira on IR) with Strome, Kubalik and Kurashev as RFA's.
If everyone besides Strome and Kubalik are re-upped that 21 forwards. So they are several forwards short of 2 complete rosters. Looks like they'll be a few free agent signings or players acquired via trade to fill out the rosters. This is as good as time as any to overhaul the minor league system.

Pronman gave their draft a B+ in the Athletic.
Like most, was underwhelmed by the DeBrincat trade but I still think part of that was to potentially get Kane to waive.
This was a highly interesting and impactful week for the Chicago organization. Let’s start with the good. I think Kevin Korchinski and Frank Nazar project to become important players of the future for their team.
Through several other picks Chicago also added players with legit upside, and I could see several NHL players coming from this draft. I could quibble with the ranges Korchinski and Sam Rinzel went in, but that’s roughly where other teams were going to pick them as well.
The loss of Kirby Dach and Alex DeBrincat, while massive, is not incorporated into this grade. This is all about their draft and what it means. I like the players they brought in; this is a strong draft for Chicago, but given what they had to do to make it happen, I would argue you’d hope for a little more too. |

And let me add my congratulations to Duncan Keith on a great career.

So at least we added more bottom six forwards to the hawks cupboard in which they already had gluttony of. This draft with the exception of nazar was epic failure. If you don't get what your asking for dcat then you do not trade him. Either build around him or try again at the tdl. On top of that they draft a defenseman not a forward. Just disappointing. So let's see what is next In offseason going forward. Let's what other head scratching moves are made oh I got one letting strome and kubalik walk for nothing. |

Cat is the kind of player you rebuild around, not trade away. 99% chance that none of those Ottawa picks yield a player half as good as Cat. Epic Fail is an understatement.
If I was Kane, I would be making a trade demand.

Who in the current prospect pool projects as a first pairing dman? You could argue they pretty much need everything and clearly they wanted Korchinski. |

Still trying to square how the same organization can make both the Jones and Cat deals.
Also trying to square the Hawks taking on a salary dump from Tor nets them nothing but moving a pick up. Remember when the Hawks were on the other end of such a deal? It cost us Teuvo.
This organization is in the toilet for a reason. I’m fearing they remain there a long time.
But congrats to Duncan, a warrior. He will be missed. His 2015 playoffs was one of the finest display of pro hockey I’ve ever seen by a Dman. No Keith no Cup! |

Its one thing to say that the return on the ADB trade was disappointing or inadequate - which it was. That opinion is almost universal.
But to regard ADB as a player to rebuild around is not sound hockey logic. He is a smallish winger who puts the biscuit in the basket playing with good set up men like Kane. And he is heading for a $9M qualifying offer next year and who knows how much one year later as a UFA, if they could even re-sign him then. (Same uncertainty as what Calgary is going thru now with Johnny Goudreau). That isn't rebuilding around a young player.
To start, what the Hawks need is a big #1 center and a wheelhorse defenceman with size and skating ability. (And size thru the lineup). They don't have the first one but maybe Korchinski fits the bill on the 2nd one. Long time before we will know,
And using my rationale about the financial commitment to ADB going forward, it makes sense to move Seth Jones now and deal with what will likely be a disappointing return. What purpose does it serve to pay him $9M for 8 years to play on a dead nuts loser for the first 3 or 4 years of that deal? |

Your right but they moved out 3 forwards and letting 2 other forwards walk . So imo they needed forwards. Doesn't matter now move forward see what is next. |

So to me they putting all their eggs in 2023 draft.

That's been likely all along. Rebuild is not very likely to come near replicating 2009-2017, no matter who is driving the bus. |
