Thanks Kevin, I enjoyed a trip back to my own youth through your writing.
I too grew up in 1960's Detroit. Gordie Howe, Al Kaline and Alex Karras were my heroes. I would go to Olympia stadium often to watch the Wings in '69 thru '72. The Power Line was exciting to watch! The team did not go very far during those years, but it was still great to be there watching them.

I played Box lacrosse during the summer of 1970 at Olympia and we got to change for games in the visitor's dressing room......it was not anything like the dressing rooms they now provide for the players. One of my better moments while exiting Olympia after a game was being thought to be Mark Howe by ....someone. We are about the same age.

Neat story about being mistaken for Mark Howe. Mark told me that he and Marty would play hockey in Olympia corridor when they were waiting for Gordie to finish signing autographs. They said he would be there at half hour or longer signing autographs.

[quote=Kevin Allen]Yes I have witnessed this as well. Gordie was usually the last one out as he had all those autograph hounds (including me) around him. I wish I could find all those autographed programs from that time!

Maurice Richard was way better! He just didn't get the same attention/protection and justice only because he was a french canadian. Nuff said, true story. E5

Thanks for this Kevin, Gordie Howe lived up to his nickname of "Mr. Hockey" in every respect. I met him a few times, and despite being a Leaf fan, I never had anything but admiration for him. Easily among the three greatest players to have played in the NHL.
