Anyone who would say Chris Pronger was a better all around defenseman than Bobby Orr knows nothing about hockey. Bobby could play physical when he had to and he was a one man penalty killing unit. Bobby's skating was outrageous, and he single handedly changed the game. I would also put Denis Potvin and Larry Robinson ahead of Pronger as all around players. Sorry you're off the mark on this one. |

Stevens was significantly better than Pronger as an all around defender. |

Pronger was an excellent defenseman, but I can think of at least a half dozen that I think were better. |

He's up there for sure. I'd say It's him or Orr. But saying Orr didn't play in his own end. People had the same criticism of Erik Karlsson, and it was never that he couldn't play in his own end. It was that he was so good that he didn't have too, so I'm not sure that's a fair point to make.
Where I would say a compelling argument for Orr being the best of all time. Is that he simply dominated games. It was his game on the ice and everyone else was just kind of there. No one has gotten to that level.
It's also quite hard to compare different decades.
I do think they should give the Norris to the best D and create a new Orr trophy for the most offensive D |

How is being suspended and having a ton of PIMs beneficial? You specifically say he had some dirty hits and that’s a good thing because it put fear into players.
By this logic, it’s perfectly fine Tom Wilson has injured a handful of players because now teams are afraid of him. Hell, even Todd Bertuzzi sucker punching Steve Moore was a great thing too, right?

Lol..... give me what you've been smoking.... not even in his era was he the best.... and in Anaheim I'm sorry but he wasn't the best d while Niedermayer played... not to mention league wide the better dmen.... Lidstrom, Zubov, Bourque, Stevens....list goes on... |

Were opposing players as afraid of Mr Pronger as Mr Pronger was afraid of Mrs Pronger?

Lidstrom no doubt was better |

Orr so revolutionized the D position that it was like an extra forward out there. He paved the way for guys like Coffey and Potvin. Pronger, Robinson and Potvin are all good arguments for #2. I would put Ray Bourque in that mix. Maybe the discussion should be ‘Who is the 2nd best all around defenseman.’ Orr is clearly #1. |

Hell, Chelios may have an argument to have been better. |

Somebody should tell Crosby to give back the 2007 Hart, apparently Pronger won it |

Lidstrom was the best ever at positioning. He was rarely out of position.

Exactly why i never participate in these "best player", top ten lists, best team, etc. debates. Its so subjective and toatally unproveable. I've watched each of the players mentioned here as better than Pronger and can only say they were all great and contributed to their teams high points. Which was the best? I don't care...just happy to have watched them play |
