It's a concern if Hoffman turned the Isles down. With Lou and Barry and the success of the last 2 years, Isles should be more attractive to UFA's especially with Belmont on the way.

Who knows if we were even in on Hoffman? I don’t know where anyone heard this and if they actually did who knows if it’s true? Also, if it were true it doesn’t necessarily mean he turned us down it could be any number of reasons why it didn’t work. With that said it would be nice to be able to add someone we KNOW can help us and not some random journeyman or resigning someone we know doesn’t move the needle. This team needs some offensive help not exactly a big secret.

It's been mentioned a few times Isles were in on Hoffman. Cannot say it's 100% true. What is true is the Isles are still struggling with attracting UFA's even with Lou and Barry. The building issue is solved and the team has been good the last 2 years so what is the issue? Isles do not have the best prospect pool at forward so they are going to have to hit on some quality UFA's.

We signed Andrew Ladd as a FA so I don't think it's an issue. That said look how good that one turned out.

Honestly don't think there was a team with the possibility of fitting him in their cap that wouldn't " be in " on Hoffman. That said The Islanders looking at their needs and what Hoffman brings definitely kicked the tires on Hoffman. For what ever reason the deal didn't get done but to your point I don't think we will have an issue signing FA's in the future.

Beside Hoffmans good but he ain't no Komarov.

Isles were probably the only team on Ladd. Hoffman would have been nice. A one year deal. A wing like Hoffman playing on a line with Barzal and being on a team with Lou and Barry and the success this team has had the last 2 year. I do not understand these players.

Isles better not have an issue signing UFA's with Belmont. Excuses will be done. If this keeps up Isles better hire Neil Smith just to sign UFA's. He managed to sign a couple of good ones in only 30 days.

Who pissed in everyone's cheerios today?

If and I mean IF Hoffman turned down the Isles it's not because of the team or perception of the franchise. You can let that garbage go... those days are long over.

It's because they don't have any friggin money left .. just like the rest of the league. If you honestly think that no one wants to sign with the team that just went to the ECF and has Barzal and Trotz you are nuts.

Toews was devastated when he was traded.. devastated.

There were plenty of people in on Andrew Ladd when the isles signed him. He was a veteran player who has won a cup, been a captain and was good for 25 goals a year. The year before we signed him he had 25 goals.. the first year on the Island he had 23 goals in 78 games. Then the injuries started.. it's unfortunate... but happens with older guys. The guys they let get away to sign him was Okposo and Franz Neilsen.. they haven't exactly had a ton of success or health either..

I think the Isles main focus is signing Barzal and until then Hoffman or any other FA's were just going to have to wait and after 3 months of waiting Hoffman took the Blue's PTO and rumored agreement of 4 to 4.5 for 1 year. Great move by Armstrong.

I thought the Cap was not an issue with the Isles and why would the Isles talk to Hoffman if they had no money? The facts are for whatever reason the Isles are still missing on top tier UFA's. Does Panarin not count? JT left Ryan Smyth left back in the day. Signing UFA's is always risky and many times it does not work out. Still most big name UFA's have not wanted any part of the Isles even when they had the money to sign the players. Players do seem to like it on the Isles but outside of trades it's been only mediocre UFA signings.

It would have been nice to sign Barzal by now. Isles have the money from Boychuk so what's the holdup? It is a great move by Armstrong. Would be nice for the Isles to get a quality UFA on the cheap for a year.

If Ladd goes on LTIR at the start of the season then there's money for Hoffman. Thats not a given yet.
The Blue's were in a bigger Cap (frank) then the Isles. Steen will go on the LTIR when the season begins and it will give Armstrong the $ needed to make the deal with Hoffman. Armstrong had all his other pieces in place and made a brilliant move.
Lou needs to sign his most important player, Barzal before signing a FA wing that is supposed to play on his line. Just my opinion of course.

Edit: There is also the fact that Hoffman's wife was the person who blew up the Ott. Senator's locker room by cyber bullying Karlsson's wife. Kinda thing Uncle Lou doesn't like on or around his team.

If Lou does not like this thing on the team do not even talk to the player then. Get Barzal signed already and then see if there is any room left. This is where any extra Cap space would help and how the Leo and Hickey deals hurt.

I just want him signed. Camp starts on the 3rd. Hope he's been on the Island ( rumored he arrived on 12/27 - 12/28 ) so he can start camp and doesn't have to quarantine or he will miss it.

waaaah waaaah friggin waaaah.... Isles have enough money to sign Barzal and have done deals with Greene and Martin. If and when they put Ladd on LTIR they will have some more to spend.

https://www.capfriendly.com/ 31 teams in the NHL.. 10 are over the cap. 14 more have less than $5 mill. The Isles have $4 mill until boychuk is on LTIR.. then have $10mill... tell me again how terrible their cap issues are... Everyone has to deal with the cap.

last year we signed all our UFA's that everyone said were gone. All of them signed for less than they would have gotten elsewhere... spare me the "no one wants to sign here" sht.. it's Fake news.

It's different signing players already on the team. I'm talking about signing top tier UFA's not currently on the team. Players seem to like it on the Isles but the trick is getting the big name UFA's to come aboard. Isles need to be able to add the final offensive player that can put them over the top. Very difficult to do this via trade or draft. Panarin was a huge miss and could have allowed for the Isles to let Eberle go. It was tough missing guys when Garth was GM and it's even more frustrating when you miss with a Hall of Fame GM and coach. Isles should be at the stage where if they really wanted Hoffman, they should be able to convince him to take a little less this year and try to go on a run with them.

They can be over the cap by 10% up until the day the season starts. At which time JB will be on LTIR and the Isles would be cap compliant. That said, they can sign him.
I don't understand why he isn't signed yet. I wasn't concerned but I am starting to be as Training camp opens the 3rd.
