I didn't mention Lucic there for purposes of the Rangers to acquire him.
It was only due to word I heard that with the Oilers desperately needing help on their back line, they will be very busy this off season in order to manipulate their way to acquire and afford that help there. That includes them being in the running for Carlson or Karlsson, i.e., John or Erik, should either or both be available, which I feel that only Erik will be the one who will be now. But if that was the result, they would still need defensive minded help there as well. Hence, they will likely have to part ways with Lucic, and eat part of his contract.

Would you swap Brendan Smith for Lucic?

Can't please everyone, I was hoping for a dynamic centerman this year but no such luck. Didn't want to reach and don't really have the relationship with the other "gm's" to hammer out deal to move back...

I'm thinking one more year in the lottery, then it's go time

I'd be very interested to see if in real life, if this situation presents itself, if the Coyotes actually would choose Wahlstrom over Tkachuk.

It seems like a coinflip to me. Do they want the grit or the pure goalscorer? You can think about position (outside of Fischer and Panik the RW position is quite bleak) but drafting in 5th better to go with the BPA.

Yes. And I'd hope the Rangers would ask/say, we'll take on the extra 3 million dollars, but we want the 10th overall pick.

Not straight even up contract for contract, Fenrir, unless for a start, Edmonton retains some of Lucic's salary, and $6M annual cap hit for each of the remaining 5 seasons of his horrible contract. But how much will they be willing to, or have to retain?
Lucic just turned 30 two days ago, and at best had a 50+ points season, but struggled offensively this past one with only 34 points in being a (-12), despite playing mostly on a line with a (+20) McDavid, including on their power play which also struggled throughout last season. His $26M due him in salary ($7M this season, then $6M, $4M, $5M,and $4M) is too much to pay just for his toughness and to protect the players. Remember those who hated the Rangers shelling out $1.5M annually for Tanner Glass's few years deal?
Smith at 29 has $12.4M due him over 3 seasons ($4.525M, $4.525M, and $3.35M), with an annual $4.35M cap hit. But both players also have NMC's, with Smith's being a 15 teams list he can be traded to for now, followed by only a 10 teams list the final 2 years. Lucic's NMC begins in June of 2021 with an 8 teams list, and increases to a 10 teams list in July of 2022 of his deal's final year.
So even in exchange for a Smith contract, Lucic's is much worse, and will require the Oilers to eat some salary and cap to dispose of, in addition to the Oilers likely having to add either another player, prospect, or pick to rid them of Lucic's deal.

Hey. Anahiem should try to trade here. I'd trade Josh Manson for the 6th . And we all know Detroit wants defense. And the red wings defense is soft. But Manson could help that.
And if you trade the ducks would take Brady tkachuk. Because we need a guy to take Corey Perry spot.

Whatever. Not a big deal. Will find a forward else where. Have fun waiting 4 years for whatever dman you draft to mature.

Logically explain why a team should trade away 6OA (a potentially elite d man you could have for 10+ years) for a good 27 year old d man that you are only guaranteed to have for 4 years?
