I think (!) what he is suggesting is that they sign JVR to a one-year deal worth $10 million, with the nudge-nudge, wink-wink that he then agrees to another contract immediately afterwards at a lower rate.

2018-19: $10 million cap hit.
Next four/six years: lower $/year, lower cap hit.

Technically speaking, I don't think it circumvents the CBA.

If I recall correctly (a big if), you can start talking contract on July 1st of the year previous, so in theory JVR could sign the whopping-big 1-year contract on June 30th, then on July 1st sign a 6 year deal.

I doubt it would ever happen, but it's not the craziest thing I've read here at Hockeybuzz.

It would suit the Leafs' cap challenges quite well.

Josh Gorges didn't want to come to Toronto, because they finished with 84 points that year - clearly he was too good for that poop-bag of a team.

Instead, he opted to go to the Buffalo Sabres - a team that had finished with 52 points.

I feel sorry for you, Symba. Your obvious hate of all things Toronto: the Leafs, the Argos, traffic congestion, TFC, lack of any proper thought on subway expansion, stealing Montreal's film festival, stealing Montreal's comedy festival, Blue Jays and Toronto Rock has rendered you incapable of a coherent post here on Hockeybuzz.
