Bob Duff: Cholowski sent to junior Dennis Cholowski, Detroit's top pick in the 2016 NHL entry draft, needs to work on his puck-carrying skills before he's ready to be a pro defenseman.

Thanks Bobby D.

Don't all teenagers have to go back to juniors? (I don't know all the different comps, but thought if juniors aren't in the NHL they can't play ahl.)

Looks like the Big Chowolski will be churning it out away from the lights a little longer.

Wow Bob thx for great insight and fresh news!!! What will be next? Z is captain? Cholo can't be sent to ahl by the way, but that's just a small detail right?

I think he could of went to the AHL as he had never played in the CHL before. Once he starts with a CHL team, then he can't go pro until his season is over.

porkchops1977 is correct. Cholowski is a special case because he was NCAA last year. The CHL-NHL transfer agreement regarding player movement would only apply to him once he officially joined his junior team.

So if the Big Cholowski goes & plays in his junior team he has to stay there, but if goes to the Ahl he can play there straight away? Interesting. Complicated with all the different comps but still.

Wrong, dunce.

He played in the NCAA last year and is signed to a pro contract. He could have been assigned to the AHL, but Detroit opted to send him to the CHL instead.

Let me guess, Liljegren can't play in the AHL, either?

It's not that complicated.

Reasons you cannot be transferred to the AHL (with a CHL contract):

You have played in the CHL.
Your team has not been eliminated from the CHL playoffs.
Are 18 or 19 years of age and don't turn 20 until the next calendar year.
