Carol Schram: Sports radio wars are about to change the flow of Vancouver Canucks news Hockey fans can brace themselves for a big change in how they get their hockey information as TSN1040 mounts an offensive to keep their listeners when the Vancouver Canucks' radio rights flip over to Sportsnet 650 next week.

i think this is a natural reaction to a team in flux.

the team has no identity. they are not defined by a player or even a style of play. they are defined as what they were.

added to this is there best young player is the typical canadian hockey personality.

so, as the team's new identity emerges, i think we'll some "attitude," kesler-like or not.

I like Bo a lot but he does have a bit of that Captain Serious aura about him. If that is the case you will have to get another personality to offset that. Much like a Kane does for Toews.

AND I"M NOT SAYING BO IS OF THE SAME SKILL SET AT TOEWS. PERSONALITY ONLY!

I just posted an opinion. I've actually acknowledged all the counter points that make sense. I'm sure Canucks management has had similar conversations internally.

I like that we've established a pretty good case for one or the other. I made a case for my preference and you guys did for yours.

It's obviously up for debate/discussion, but I don't think there's anything wrong with having a strong preference for one side or the other. I may not have posted all the downsides to going long term but I 100% considered the 3 main concerns.

1) Player becomes UFA sooner since a bridge deal allows for another negotiation while the player is still a RFA

2) Player may not continue to improve, thus meaning the contract could be a long term overpay and not save any future dollars

3) Precedent set for future RFA's on team(arguably a good thing if Horvat's deal is strong value).

I still prefer the upside of going long term now

and a few days (week?) ago, i mentioned that i'd rather a long term deal. even if he's over paid in 3 years, the cap will have gone up to make up for it. worst case, he'll be a slightly over paid 3LC.

however, i could see projections that value a 2 year bridge + 8 year deal better than a long term deal right away.

personality counts for a lot. teams often take on the personality of their stars.

serious and head down is great but you also need your stars to have swagger and "i'm the fcuking man" syndrome.

personality doesn't just mean goofy and joking.

CAP goes up as does contracts.
Also goes up only if the escalator is used or the Canuck buck rises.
Betting on revenues going up otherwise is risky

Yeah, I've looked at the hypotheticals both ways and even if the cap doesn't rise, the numbers still make more sense to do long-term now, but only if it's 7 or 8 years. The new American TV deal in the future should raise the cap down the line though so a 2 year bridge and then a long term deal could also be prudent.

It was a previous conversation about team swagger. With a team without an identity I'm looking forward to seeing some sign of swagger coming from this team. Much like the emerging canuck team of the late 90's and early 2000's.

I don't think you'll see that from Bo. Too serious. Need someone else with a little rick flare.

if we see a potential contending window 5-8 years from now, i could see why they may want contract certainty over a longer period.

locking bo down long term in 2 years vs now would give them less long term contracts to deal with at the same time in 8 years?

you have to imagine that they are more concerned about cost increases to boesser etc more than bo.

bo will get a raise but you know his contract will never be one to break a cap. so i can see why they may want to delay a long term deal.

(contract negotiations should be televised. that's more entertaining than the product on the ice these days.)
