The thing I hate about a 30 year old enforcer though is around that point they get sick of enforcing and would rather be more of a player. Hopefully he does both. 6 fights in 80 games means he wasn't just out there for his fists, but they did trade for him to get that element. Big hits work fine too though

Pretty harsh on Mr. Reeves- I'm thinking he can be a decent player for Pens and to be clear he's light years better than Tostito -

I don't understand it. What made it worse was that I was actually at the draft and hearing a 1st round pick traded for Ryan (frank)ing reaves was just embarrassing. Jokiharju and tolvanen fall past 25, but your 1st instinct is to go after Ryan reaves.

Agree. Insane trade. Reaves is even UFA after this year, so no guarantee he's around past this year anyway...it's well known that GMJR doesn't put much value on draft picks vs known talent, but this is pretty obviously a bad deal.

This might be the worst trade of JR's tenure...after all the magic he's worked out so far. Dud

I was waiting for Beta Male Ryan Wilson to hate on this

Before I read the article, is there some fancy stats showing Sundqvist was an AHL dynamo?

There is, isn't there?

Good to see GMJR hasn't lost his touch. Though I was wondering. Seems like he had quite a run at the table with things working.

Reaves really isn't your prototypical "enforcer". He is more of an energy bodychecker who a lot of guys don't want to fight. But let's be honest, there are less and less of those guys dressing most nights year after year. Still, he can score a few goals and is beloved in the community.

I do have to say I'm glad they protected him now--that prospect seems like he could be a home run and wouldn't have been available to the Blues tomorrow, most likely.

Exactly. Do I think this was a good trade? No. But I do think it's largely inconsequential, especially if the Pens saw not much difference between 31 and 51. Leave it to Wilson to act like it's the end of the world for the Pens, though.

I also expect more from this blogger than the hyperbole that this was for a "1st round pick", when while true, it was a 20 pick drop given we received a 2nd in return

He's not. Reaves actually skates better than Sundqvist. Good defensive player though.

I wonder if #87 and #71 are happy about the trade?

I was going to say the same thing. If you are expecting Sundqvist to be a home run, you are going to be disappointed. His upside is ground rule double at best, imho.

Like I said in the last blog. Yohe said multiple times last year that the stars loved having Sestito in the lineup. Take it for what it's worth.

True. Just reminds me of the Despres trade. Seems like JR is making trades for the sake of making trades. Just glad no roster player was involved yet (praying for a dman tomorrow)

Great pick up. Poor value.

I would have liked to see our 1st potentially packaged with some other things for a top 4 D or 3rd C but oh well.

I know we just won 2 cups without this kind of player and blah blah blah but I think it is time for the roster to infuse some heavy forechecking and some fresh legs. Can't wait to see how this all fits into JR's master plan.

I believe that the overreacting comes only because we've seen all of the Duchene rumors, we know that they want a top pairing defenseman, we see that trade was made, we hear Sundquist's name, and every pens fan thinks that we just fleeced someone out there. So, there is shock. Is it a bad trade? Meh...I guess. But, it's a long offseason.

All that I want to know is can Reeves skate?

Where Ryan Wilson is an idiot is he thinks this this type of player takes away the cheap shots. It doesn't, nothing does. What it takes away is all the little cross checks and hacks behind the play, and the verbal garbage they have to put up with during the game.

Knowing a guy like Reaves is coming off the bench and isn't afraid to finish his check on you, might serve to calm a few guys down some

And he plays 9 minutes a game and manages to score 7 goals. How many goals our other 4th liners score this year? So the guy can play, he's not an ogre like Sestito

Yes, thats why a "premium" was paid on him. Thats why the Blues protected him in the expansion draft

Whatever. Crosby and company need some protection.

For those who claim this is vomit, what would you have done?

The Pens are pretty stacked with young forwards, although a 3C and 4C who can kill penalties would be nice. Looks like Bones is getting overpaid and too many years, perhaps by the Pens, which will hurt the Pens come 2020 or so--that is a potential consequence of this move.

Pick 31 isn't worth that much in this draft, and if they thought all that highly of the Russian kid and Sundquivst they would not have made it this trade. There likely were few other trades to be made right now, or the Pens would have made them.

I personally would have tried to hold out a bit longer to perhaps a lower round to get Reaves, but it is what it is. STL protected him, after all...

Not talking about Sundqvist being a home run. Talking about Klim Kostin. Potentially a top 10 talent who dropped because of his injury and the russian factor, wouldn't have been there in 20 picks.
