He's had an unbelievable career, and I'm sure he's a great guy......but he is the absolute WORST announcer in hockey. All his little quips and anecdotes are like nails on a chalkboard.

To each, his own.
However, I have never understood this. I've heard a majority of the announcers since 1971 (Hewitt, Kelly, Hart, etc) and there is a reason that Emrick has been the primary national announcer since the mid-80's: He's thoroughly prepared and calls the action as quickly, accurately and with no mispronounciations better than anyone else. Most people and , more importantly, his color analysts enjoy his quips and anecdotes. Fortunately, your opinion is in the minority and the rest of us get to hear him call the games.

Scoop, when the Flyers brought him back and got Clement for the 87-88 season, why was it for only the one year? Too much money? Respect for Gene Hart? Did NJ back up a money truck?

Thanks

Happy birthday, Mike Emrick!

I don't think it's as much of a minority as you'd think. His play-by-play calling is impressive with its speed and accuracy, but you can only listen to him say "fire-wagon change" and "the puck's squibbed ahead" so many times before the TV ends up on mute.

That said, he does seems like a great guy so it's not really an issue for me that he's used so frequently.

Is the long-haired man in that often-seen picture at the top, drinking from the Stanley Cup, in fact, Scoop Cooper?
