Because the team isn't a "cup contender". making the playoffs and maybe losing in RD1 and then letting Loui walk for nothing would be hard to swallow.
Like Soderberg last year would have brought a nice return, they kept him to make playoffs, they didn't, and he walked with no return (OK well a garbage late pick for his rights).
Team is in a bad spot identity wise.
One huge positive from last game is Chara had his best game in MONTHS. He played fantastic and shut down one of the best lines on hockey all night long. |

Nice write up. The blow-out loss to LA wasn't the end of the world, so it's good not to get too excited about lighting up Dallas. You're never as good or as bad as you look.
Also, sign Loui. Return wont be worth as much as keeping him. Krug's next deal is becoming more affordable by the day.

While I like Loui and would like to see him resigned, I think shipping him off in a package deal for a defenseman is the right move. He's gonna want too much for too long and Marchand is coming up next year and he's gonna need a big raise... |

The playoffs are a different animal. You never know. I honestly not sure what's gonna happen with the Bolts or even if we make it in. |

Very true, if anything they could maybe push in the East, but realistically with the Defense they deploy on a nightly basis they aren't running the table this year. I would rather see them add pieces and get some D help rather than be a 1st or 2nd round knockout this season. |

Agree that the money won't fit, but Idon't see how Loui could bring back a Dman that will help this year.
Will be picks and/or prospects. |

Mentioning Krug's contract is, IMO, a big player in this situation. Before this season, Krug's bridge contract deal seemed dangerous. I don't think he deserves a raise after this season (Unless the next 20 games he explodes). I think a 10.5-12 million for 3 seasons or something similar is fair for him. This would ultimately tie him up until Seids and Chara go, and if he finds his shot and continues to develop, he will get his payday for long-term. Then the money from Lucic's coming off the books more than covers Louie's raise, which is really the only player deserving of any kind of raise. (And the rest from Lucic gives them enough to give Connolly about a million more which he is barely deserving of). Kelly's contract will be gone which gives them WAY MORE THAN Sufficient spare change to resign whoever they decide to, Randell, Ferraro, Kemp, Talbot? (Honestly, Talbot and Kemp don't even need new contracts, and if they do, it is pretty much status quo). Same with the kids on D, they don't deserve much of anything more than they are getting and they are RFAs so have no real leverage. Move Hayes next season to free up more room to give Spooner/Pasta raises, or shop Spooner.
On another note, why haven't we talked about a scenario where Boston trades for a D-man without losing Louie? Instead of moving Eriksson, trade Hayes and a first for someone like Scandella. Help for now and later. Then the pressure is off for finding the D-man they need and can focus on getting Marchand, Spooner, Pasta under contract in the future.
I have wasted way too much time on this post... |

Thats where to cost comes into play... That and a Dman! We aren't in bad cap shape, but worry it goes down due to the CAN $$. Hopefully a few ELC's come up and fill holes like Vatrano, Griffith, Carlo etc. |

With the playoffs in site, why would you trade him? - Artyukhin76
While in the middle of retool you want to keep an eye on the future as well as right now. Losing Eriksson to trade will hurt as your putting holes in the top 6 as well as PP and PK. However if they cannot come to agreement on a new contract you don't want to let him walk for nothing and should try to get a return for him.
Apparently Andrew Ladd is going to worth a 1st rounder. If that's the case Eriksson should get at least that. |

Ty Anderson: B's make trip a success; Eriksson trade watch continues - tyanderson
It’d be easy for the Bruins to blame ‘old management’ and simply ship Eriksson off to the highest bidder before Feb. 29, but man oh man will it look bad for the Bruins if the only thing they have to show for trading a top-line center is a seventh defenseman they rotate in and out of the lineup every other game. By now, most have come around to admit that the Seguin trade was a huge miscalculation for the B’s front office, but some of the loudest voices in that room from that era, team president Cam Neely and Don Sweeney, were with the team then, and remain there now. So, saying, ‘Well the old regime did that, can’t blame us!’ would border on insulting to their fanbase.
Disagree. This needs to be left in the past. It's over. Seguin is not coming back and Eriksson is probably not going to get the contract he wants in Boston. The Bruins AND THE FANBASE have to move on from this colossal blunder and push ahead. They were forced to after the Joe Thornton abortion and did just fine. Unless you consider winning a cup and being a serious threat to win for several years a failure. |
