Man , what is going with Pittsburgh? Now they take on Hagelins salary? 4 mil a year until 2019. - Hextall271
I accidentally flagged this.
Let's just say I flagged it because it makes me incredibly happy and I want don't want to feel this happy this early on a Saturday.

What does it take for Weal to get into the lineup? A loss? Or maybe he just isn't showing he is better than RJ in practice even though I find that hard to believe |

It's like I always say: Most trades are net neutral. Perron and Hagelin are the same player. You're trading a little speed for a little skill, hoping that one guy clicks with a new line/team where he didn't with the previous organization.
Five years from now when we look back, I'd bet a paycheck that neither player does much more than they're doing right now. They pretty much are what they are (and what most players in the NHL are): Capable of hot stretches, dependent upon linemates, complementary players.
Doesn't make them bad, doesn't make them good. Just one of those trades where each team is hoping to catch lightning in a bottle |

Classic if it ain't broke don't fix it. I'm with Hak on that tbh
And even though his contract suck, RJ has been treading water for the last week and a half or so |

My guess is that Hakstol just feels that the team is on a roll and he doesn't want to (frank) with it right now. If they keep winning, it's tough to argue with.

I did, too. Defense can't really move the puck, other than Letang, PP looks lost, and his linemates either can't keep up or can't finish
Plus: People might not want to acknowledge it, but Malkin's the better player now, by quite a bit

Yeah, but a guy making 4.6M has gone almost 50 games without a goal... Something not right with the player.
As long as they win.. I guess that is what it comes down to |

Taking on the longer contract & giving up a prospect on D is a questionable move. Pens already faced a cap crunch, and Hagelin isn't a clear upgrade on Perron. Odd deal, given need on defense |

It's hard to make that case contractually, tho.
Perron's a pending UFA... if he can't score, the Ducks just let him walk (or trade him again). They can replace him with something else.
Hagelin's never broken 20-goals or 40-pts... and he's got $8M left and two more years on his deal. Pens already had 5 forwards making ~$4M or more. Hagelin's now the 6th. |

To be fair, Nobody has really played poorly enough to really be yanked. They've been winning, and even guys like Umberger have been mostly ok. Weak will get in eventually |

I'm honestly talking about the on-ice production -- hadn't even glanced, really, at the contractual status of either.
Perron has played with just about everyone on the Pens' Top 9, extended stints with Malkin/Crosby, both LW and RW. He can still stickhandle but the production just isn't there, hasn't been for a while, dating back to his final months in Edmonton
Hagelin, as you noted, isn't really a goal-scorer. But Perron's been so non-impactful, just really of no use, I see why they made the move. Yes, looking at the contract, I understand your point, but at the same time, they are looking for anyone who can click with Malkin and/or Crosby better than what they've been getting, because they are trying to win now
If you ask me if that's what they should be doing, I said the other day that they need to recognize that the window is likely closed and they should move one of Malkin or Crosby. But that isn't what they're trying to do

They're probably hoping for Chris Kunitz 2.0.
But damn... that's a lot of scratch/term to be doling out for a tryout, don't you think? If they waited until the summer, they could probably have found a guy like Hagelin on a MDZ kind of deal pretty easily. Instead, it seems like they're doubling down on a PO run now.

The Philadelphia Flyers, Minnesota Wild, Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche and New York Rangers have also expressed serious interest.
The Habs, Flyers, Ducks, Washington Capitals and San Jose Sharks had scouts in attendance for Drouin's game Friday night.
