Just imagine if McDavid or Crosby had an expiring contract. That's where you would see some serious offer sheets out there. No point losing 4 first over a Dougie Hamilton or a Brandon Saad but no problem losing them over a franchise guy.
Problem is those guys never become an RFA for enough time to get offer sheeted |

Make the compensation less ridiculous, I'd like to see more offer sheets. As free agency is getting lamer every year |

This I would like to see. Don't make it nothing, but make it a little less ridiculous. I think two first round picks is a lot to give up, let alone 4. |

Yeah cause small market teams in baseball never make the playoffs. Like last year, the Royals, A's, San Fransico and Pittsburgh. HUGE markets. |

You had to bring Weber up, Ek? It's been 5 months 28 days 14 hours 22 minutes and 37 seconds since I thought about that horrible outcome. Brb calling my therapist. |

Exactly what Mashadar said. If you need a reason for why there's less machismo with regards to not being afraid of offer sheets, it's because the cap has not gone upwards the way a lot of GMs were expecting, and as a result there are a lot of teams tip-toeing on the brink of cap hell. They quite honestly can't afford to match an offer sheet the way they could in the past. |

The idea of a team drafting, developing a player just to have him stolen though is ridiculous. I like the compensation as is. |

Offer sheets are useless as long as Brian Burke is no longer a GM! His hysterics made the concept worth it from the start, but since no one else has his truculence in the executive offices this is unlikely to be an effective tool at drumming up buzz and/or back office entertainment across the NHL. |

With the move to younger and younger players the cost of an offersheet needs to be reexamined or that UFA status is obtained after 350 games played. |

Awesome it was so much better when teams with wealthy owners looking to win could buy cups. They should bring back the 2 line pass too. |

why don't you push for closing that loop hole that allows a player to leave his drafted team and receives no compensation. and the tampering that goes along with it, seems like a more important issue than this offersheet bullcrap.if you don't want a team to offersheet one of your players than don't low ball that player, quit handing out these 10.5 mil dollar contracts over extending team budget. there is a cap in this league and all 30 gm's and presidents of their teams know that they must stay under it. this is not rocket science guy's you can't carry 4 lines of great players and expect to stay under the cap. and when your young stars grow up and your team has to move a older player to compensate these young guys that's what you do.I myself like that each team is on a level playing field and i'm ok with this. I hope it stays that way in the future, it makes for some great hockey. |

Offer Sheets are just another tool in the negotiation process, or a pawn in the game of player management. Nowadays, it seems like GMs are too afraid to use them. There is a lot of talk and rumors about teams using them, but that is just a smoke screen to get a team to flinch first. Which a lot of players, teams, GMs, and fans can see right through.
I would use them. The $100k legal fees are nothing in today's sports world, and if used correctly losing $100k is the worst that can happen. |
