I like the Jones signing, we needed to have some insurance on the farm for our centers and while highly unlikely it is possible he could earn a role as the 4C.
I think that is this team's biggest weakness at this point is C depth and Vey is not part of the solution. He might end up being a C but it won't be in the bottom 6 and most likely will make it as a winger.
I might have issues with Dorsett's contract and the price to acquire Prust but I am excited to see them both on the 4th line. Both players can legitimately play the game but they will need a strong Center to push the play in the right direction and that wont be Vey IMO.
FA options:
Jim Slater, would cost very little and is a very effective if not flashy player.
Marcel Goc, would cost more and is fragile but a good C.
James Sheppard, low cost but decent energy forward.
Eric Fehr, will cost more and is more suited to a top 6 role but would allow Bonino/Horvat to take the 4C position
Jarett Stoll, reclamation project, would be buy very low but I doubt he is an option.
Santorelli or Lapierre would be low cost options.
Trade options/RFA
Marcus Kruger, Chi has no space to resign and just signed Anisimov.
Cedric Paquette, TBL need to resign Namestnikov and he might be expendable.
Brian Boyle, see above TBL needs cap space.
Zack Smith, Ott has some younger C's and might be looking to move him.
Joakim Anderson or Glendening, have good size and Det is flush with C depth.

Markstrom could very well end up being a better goalie than Luongo. |

The Canadian dollar hasn't been this low since March 2009, good job Stephen Harper.
Edit: it's a good thing he's the 6th highest paid world leader. |

At least it is resulting in a low salary cap which severely screws Chicago and LA |

People pile it on to Gillis for that deal, but you can't blame the guy. When he signed Luongo to that deal, front-loaded contracts were becoming the norm, and were not illegal. He could not have foreseen that the NHL would subsequently, after the fact, establish rules that would punish teams that signed those types of contracts. Essentially, what the NHL did was establish a law, and were willing to punish teams for breaking that law even if they had broken it before the law even existed.
Imagine that the city of surrey enacts a fine tomorrow for playing on their soccer fields without a permit, and then after the fact writes up tickets for anyone that has played on it's fields for the last 50 years. That's pretty much what the NHL did, and in doing so completely deflated Luongo's value. I don't blame Gillis for the return, but I blame him for the way that he handled that whole situation. |

No, but he will get us a second or third rounder which is exactly what we signed him for.

The dollar went down with the oil prices, over-supply on the world market....I don't think Harper controls that?

Gillis wasnt 100% in the dark on the risk he was taking right before the new CBA was going to be battled over. There was a reason 30 teams were not laying out those kind of structured contracts. Gillis/Gillman gambled and lost is what happened.
