I am pretty surprised at Engelland not being much lower.. and glad Bortuzzo was no slouch either.
Also, big props to the undertaking this guy did to track all this data. |

Some of these deep data dive blogs make me lose interest. This, however, was really really interesting. I like the format too (showing the chart and then discussing/drawing conclusions). I feel like it does accurately mirror what we see with the eye test.
One thing i noticed -- Just because letang and despres have thn type of turnovers that make you cringe and stick in your memory doesn't mean they are turnover machines as some would think.
A big takeaway for me is just seeing how much more value a two-way (puck skilled) defenseman brings versus the stay at home types. I think we may see a spike in goals allowed this year given the lack of physicality/crease clearers on the blue line, but this data makes me think we could be scoring like a well oiled machine with all these skilled defenseman. |

I have a feeling that Maatta's numbers are the way they are due to youth and inexperience. He falls into the category of guys with puck skills but he was also 19 and jumped straight from the OHL to the NHL.
The eye test showed how bad Scuderi was, but these graphs make it seem so much worse. Like dumpster fire bad. |

So in his short time Despres was slightly better than Bortuzzo and Engelland, despite facing lesser competition, overall making them almost the same in terms of effective on ice play. If you are going to get the same quality of play on the ice, and these stats are proving it here, why the hell would you not play the prospect with a much higher ceiling who needs time to grow in the league?
You have to figure that this past season was by far Matt Niskanen's best. It is also not much different than what would be Christian Ehrhoff's average. Considering the possible increase in play on a better team, plus the growth of Olli Maatta, then you have a more potent combination in the second pairing then you had last season.
Letang and Martin together should be one of the best possession pairings in all the NHL next season. Hard to believe they can be that effective despite playing with cardboard cutouts.

Seeing Scuds' numbers is also baffling. Add in Glass, Pyatt, and Vitale's corsi ratings and you have your answer as to why Crosby was MVP. It's pretty impressive they won games last season. |

I imagine that Maatta and Despres' numbers (and probably most other guys) were both way better before January. |

Looks to me like Engelland for 550K was a pretty good value player for the pens. Not to mention he scored more goals at forward than half our bottom six last year. |

Good thing is that Scuderi can't get any Worse than last year (injuries).
I expect him to be the stay at Home defenseman we signed for...with less turnovers only and a bit more mobile.
Määttä played the stay at Home position on his line. The bad numbers have to be considered due to his role as well. |

I don't see Scuderi's turnover numbers improving. He may be a little more "mobile" than last year if he's healthy....and yes mobile is a relative term. But he still has no puck skills and is going to go high off the glass more often than not...which lends itself to turnovers. I'd love to see this data go back a few years and compare Scuderi to 09.
These numbers were from the first half of the season. Wasn't Maatta with Nisky for most of that time. If memory serves he spent some time with Bortuzzo as well. So he had some hard minutes but mostly decent partners. |

A new coach and a new system will change these numbers for sure. I can't wait to see Despres better utilized. Will miss Niskanen on the PP though. Question is, who will be in net moving forward? Here is some information that shows Rutherford likes Fleury but not sign him right now kind of love.
