I would trade Kap and my left nut to the Sens for Lazar in a heartbeat.

Scott Harrington has Daniel Girardi potential. He's good.

Ehrhoff (rumors of contract extension come January)

Where did you hear this from Gunner? Do you think Ehrhoff would get a raise on this possible extension?

Seems like the first time in years there are actually competitions at spots. Should be good for the team overrall.

Your left nut has negative value in that trade proposal

14. Christian Ehrhoff surprised by taking one year in Pittsburgh, but no one would be stunned if he's extended not long after Jan. 1. That's when he's eligible to do it.

The only thing I was worried about was it seemed like we could have a lot of guys that turn out to be 4th -5th defenseman (Harrington, Dumoulin, Despres.). Its exciting as it seems like Pouliot Maatta and Harrington have top 2 potential.

Some interesting thoughts from the article:

39. If Jason Spezza had waived to Nashville, the package to Ottawa was going to be similar (if not exact) to what the Predators gave up for James Neal.

41. Now that Ron Hextall is in charge, what ideas come from Los Angeles to Philadelphia with him? "I liked how the defence pairs were put together," he said, remembering the Doughty/Scuderi, Mitchell/Voynov, Greene/Martinez duos that won a Stanley Cup. One sleeker model, one conservative. "Off the glass and out is the last resort," Hextall said.

43. Hextall also likes "pairs" up front, where two guys get used to playing with each other and a third can be rotated through. He believes Claude Giroux/Jakub Voracek and Sean Couturier/Matt Read have that chemistry, while Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds are getting there.

I can't say for certain, but I think there's a trend toward this in the NHL today. Many teams face the same issues of trying to keep lines productive given limited true 1st and 2nd line players. It makes a lot of sense from a coach's standpoint and even a financial one if you think about 4 pairs of two and then 4 other guys. You mix guys up so you can make sure different players have worked together and to keep things fresh.

Just an example of how it COULD work (does not include any rookies or WB guys):

Crosby/Kunitz
Malkin/Hornqvist (obv used to be Neal...assuming these two find chemistry)
Sutter/Spalling???
Goc/Comeau???

Then you have 4 versatile players to fill in on the wings
Dupuis, Bennett, Downie, Adams

Hmm...not sure how I feel about this. Seems like its just an excuse for having lots of swing guys. I'd rather not think in pairs and just shuffle lines in whatever way makes sense based on game situations.

I've been pumping Harringtons tires all along. I was very happy we stole him in the second rd. Afterr taking joe maybe see ya tommorow. Watching him play for London and team Canada there is nothing flashy he just gets it. He is a solid hockey player.I think its a good problem having all these d prospects but a few of em r ready for the next step in development. Time to sh!T or get off the pot. Get m in the show or get sid some Youngblood wingers

Yes, and I know Paul Martin is a great hockey player and a top pairing guy. But Maatta, Despres, Harrington, Dumoulin, and maybe Pouliot are NHL ready. I think we can afford to trade Martin for a top 6 winger.

Or go all-in on this season, keep Martin, and trade a young defenseman for a young forward. Why wait for the draft to address the forward depth? Utilize the D kids one way or another. Stud W prospect close to NHL ready for Stud D prospect close to NHL ready...

I'd be leery about playing so many young defensemen that have very little or zero NHL experience. That's asking for trouble, IMHO. The Pens have to take advantage of the roster they have, particularly with Malkin and Sid. The second part of your statement makes ma lot of sense: they need to find a trading partner that can trade us a young NHL ready forward in exchange for one of our stud young defensemen.

so to comment on mr. ekland. I would like to see malone offered a camp tryout. maybe he is healthy and has something to prove. dont think he has much hockey left in him but if he plays his heart out maybe he'd be worth a minimum contract

Harrington, Dumoulin, and Samuelsson are all really young. The bonus of keeping them down while they can is that they can figure out who is going to fit long-term without exposing them.

Interestingly enough, Dumoulin and Samuelsson have played more games at WBS than Despres has.

Harrington is still very young - 21. They're likely best off taking their time with him.

Dumoulin is the same age as Despres. None of the 3 you listed have anywhere near his ceiling either.

as we approach the season and our roster takes form... here are the things that stick out.

1. Fantastic top 4. Letang, Martin, Erhroff, and Maatta is a very good group. I think once healthy and the guys prove that they can play in the NHL, you look to deal martin for another weakness up front. Not only is this defense very good but they are very mobile, something that i believe is necessary to succeed against the best teams.

2. top 6 is still very weak IMO. loved the addition of Hornqvist and the subtraction of Neal... but still have doubts about guys like Bennett and Kunitz... plus who knows who the 6th forward will be because i dont think dupuis is the answer

3. having said that about dupuis, i think having him back will be very helpful. i really think he can thrive on a 3rd line role. I think the 3rd line has the potential to be one of the better 3rd lines in hockey.

4. the fourth line i still have my doubts about. Goc will be one of the best 4th line centers in the league but it depends who else is on there. adams shouldnt be in at all. I dont mind Comeau. I like Downie. Wouldnt be against a younger guy from the AHL but the bottom 6 needs to be better

overall this team is a much better team than last year. i still question their toughness like they were missing last year, but i like this team as long as the coaching is what we expect it to be.

harrington is my favorite of the bunch. as ryan mentioned in his blog, he plays such a below the radar game and is overlooked for the sexier guys like pouliot.

i think harrington will be an absolute stud over his career. i think he is ready this year, but no reason to rush him.

What has Kunitz ever done to warrant doubt? Bennett is going to be hurt, I know I sometimes put him in my lineups I feel I need to post but we should all just stop because hes going to be hurt. Downie should play with Sid, simple as that.
