I would definitely keep Glass. Great penalty killer, energy guy, can lay big hits, gritty, good team mate ect. Everything you want from him. |

I don't think that you get anything higher than a 4th rounder for his rights.
I know that we saw a couple of moves last summer, but with the free agent interview window, I can't image why a team would give up too much for a player's UFA rights.
Unless a GM knows that he has a legitimate shot at signing someone, why give up an asset? And if a GM knows he has a shot, there has likely been some back channel tampering going on.
You mentioned Colorado, they do have 3 three 4th round picks, so maybe they do give up one to get a crack at Niskanen.
I can't imagine Niskanen not going to the open market. This is a huge opportunity for him this season, and he'd be foolish to not hear what sort of options he has, both in terms of money, but also in his destination. |

The Penguins have a number of unrestricted free agents that will be sure to draw some interest on the market, some of these players they should allow to walk (Orpik, Glass, Pyatt, Vitale, Conner, Engelland) and other players they will need to have a discussion about (Niskanen, Jokinen, Stempniak, and Goc)
I'd love to see Niskanen and Jokinen back but I have a sneaking suspicion they're not coming back. Even if Jokinen wants to come back, I think someone is going to offer him more. Niskanen is as good as gone. He's going to get some ridiculous offer from someone.
It will be a shame to lose them. Then we'll be stuck re-signing Orpik and the piano that's strapped to his back. |

I've seen a lot of people say that Jokinen will get higher offers out there, and I just don't think that's true.
Last spring, no one wanted the guy for $3 million, and while he had a very good season, I can't see too many GM's wanting to throw much more money at him. His numbers last year were a marginal increase over most of his career averages, and that difference can probably be dismissed as the Malkin effect.
I think he can be re-signed here for around the $3 mil that he made last season. |

Never trust Russians, Malkin is happy he doesn't have to use a passport to go on vaca in Crimea anymore.
JJ I think might stay. He cleared waivers twice in his career I believe and the only reason he is in the NHL is cuz CAR ate a chunk of his salary. I don't think the offers will be as huge as ppl believe, he did play with 71 most the year which upped his pts a bit. He might have some loyalty in Pitt. 3yrs/3mil, keep him. Anything above 3.5 hes gonna have to walk. |

The sad thing is I would take Orpik any day of the week over Scuds, although not at Scuds contract, just in general. |

That is exactly what TSN was discussing at the end of last week. They made mention that despite his good season he is very streaky and playing here boosts his numbers. Most said that unless some team absolutely needed power play help he will not get much, if any, increase from his prior deal. |

Generally, I've always thought trading for a player's rights is poor value. At best, you'll pay them market value, at worst you traded for literally nothing. The player has even more leverage than he did with his previous team because, not only can he walk, you've already invested some asset in getting him signed.
One wrinkle to consider: can a team that acquires a player's rights offer him an eight year contract? |

Let me go read 10,000 pages of the CBA and get right back to you. |

I believe so, as the player's contract would transfer to the new team (i.e., the old contract isn't expired at the time of the trade).
I think this can be a big difference in situations where a team desires to sign a player for 8 years, which they cannot get on the open market. Then, the team is likely to pay more for the rights... |

Well that makes a huge difference. Colorado give us Mcginn obviously we would sweeten the pot but it's one piece they would want. |

I wouldn't be at all surprised if there was a clause specifically regarding teams acquiring rights re: the eighth year. This is the NHL CBA we're talking about here. |

didnt we give up a 3rd round pick for hamhuis rights then he signed in vancouver? i say if anyone wants to offer us decent round picks for guys we arent going to sign then great we should take them, otherwise we better not even consider trading our draft picks for the rights unless we know they will resign with us |

touche, well now that ive read it it hadnt occured to me that being able to write off hamhuis allowed us to focus on martin from the start, in that sense i guess it can be a benficial move, but were basically still signing a free agent that anyone can sign and giving up a 3rd round pick, but still I guess I do see how that allowed us to go right after martin and not bother with hamhuis, good stuff!
