With much of the negative attention on Malkin’s goalless streak reaching 10 games, Sidney Crosby is not far behind, not having scored in 7 consecutive games himself. - Ryan_Wilson
Yikes! That is insane. Or ridiculous. Or both.

Speaking of despres, what happened to him? Last season he was being hailed as a current top-25 defenseman (by some) and now he's stuck at 8th on the depth chart? I'm not trolling I'm actually just curious. |

First and foremost, he's caught in a numbers game. He can be sent to WB without being exposed to waivers.
There's also some rumors out there that the team isn't satisfied with his work ethic and his development......of course they've never officially said that.
When asked why Maatta made the team over a guy like Despres, Bylsma did say performance was a part of it.
Bottom line... They want all the depth they can get even if a good prospect stays in A. Can't say I blame them considering all the injuries that plague this team year after year. |

Gotcha. At what point does he need to clear waivers? I'm still a bit shaky on that (it's an accrued games played limit, right?). |

That jägr clip is hilarious , made Shea look like a prospect , hehe . Jägr is an amazing human to have this much longevity. His hockey IQ is equivalent to that of Yoda with the force |

I'm not sure either. Maybe Gunner can fill us in on the specifics. I'm pretty sure it's a least a couple more years for Despres.
Things will shake out sooner rather than later for him. Both Niskanen and Orpik are UFA's. If you see guys like Dumoulin or Harrington getting the call before Despres, you'll know his stock is dropping with management.
While the fans recognize the log jam on defense this year, most of us didn't understand the handling of the kid last year when he was clearly a better option over a guy like Engo. Dan has his favorites. Sometimes it's extremely frustrating. |

Capgeek's waiver calculator says he'll be waiver eligible in either one year or after another 90 games played. Take that as likely but unofficial, I'm only mostly certain I entered the info correctly. |

As well as Fleury played for most of the evening, once again the game winner was a rather soft goal of dubious distinction. Once again, Fleury finds a way to allow a soft goal right when the team needs him most. Its a shame that such lapses always seem to tarnish otherwise solid performances. It's hard to have confidence in him in tight games until he proves he can shake that tendency to allow back-breaking goals at the most in-opportune times.
It would be nice if 87, 71 and a few others could find a way to show up on the scoreboard too. Losses such as St Louis are not entirely on the goaltender--a little offensive help and that tough goal merely changes the margin of victory. Until 18 and 19 return to form and 87 and 71 shake their malaise, Fleury cannot allow the questionable goals, no matter how well he plays otherwise. |

This is the last year of his entry level deal so he can pass freely both ways this year. |

Disagree with your assessment. Fleury's performance was fine. The team and defense in front of him did not play all that well. |

Agreed. The defense (team-wide) has been pretty lackluster the last few games. Fleury hasn't been lights-out, but I don't think he's the issue. |

Yeah, I'm not on board with the Fleury assessment here. Anytime your goaltender plays at a .938% level he has done more than enough to allow the team to win. If he mixes in a terrible goal and is in the low .900% area or dare I say upper .800's then you have a problem. |

He stopped at least a couple of point blank shots. He was not the problem. I thought the game winner was deflected anyway. Never did get a great replay of that goal.
MAF wasn't responsible for the repeated dominance of possession by the Blues. I think that was a good measuring stick type of game unfortunately.... |

I don't know, if I could pick the two defensemen that the Penguins can least afford to have out of the lineup it would be Martin and Scuderi.
Categorize that as an excuse or however you want but the reality is that the Penguins are not close to being as good without them in the lineup . |

I would hope that in the playoffs if we are in that type of situation Despres or another callup would dress in place of Engelland. |

The crazy part is the amount of interference let go in that game. I shudder to think what the playoffs will look like this year. |

I think that they should call somebody up now if Martin cannot go on Wednesday.

Penguins are built with the understanding that the rules will at least be somewhat enforced. If they aren't, that will be an uphill battle. |
