Bite a $27 mill bullet for 1 year of service and then trade him? - LordStanley88
If he walks for 4 late first Rounders, the team will fold in 5 yrs. And lose way more then 27 mill. Your point I taken but long term they lose 3 x as much not matching |

If teams want to offer 14, 15 or even 20 year deals, I say let them. BUT, then make it so those teams are on the hook for that ENTIRE contract including cap hit, whether the player is traded, retires or suffers a career ending injury. The NHL has to quit worrying about teams circumventing the process and start finding ways to dissuade teams from wanting to dabble in such deals because it would handcuff them in the long term.
Implementing a luxury tax on top of the Hard Salary cap would also deter major market teams from offering such lucrative long term deals. ie. teams that offer signing bonuses over 10% of the term amount of the contract and offering anything over 7 years could be subject to a "luxury tax". This could mean one of many possibilities ie. lowered cap ceiling, loss of draft pick(s) etc...
Obviously the NHL does not want to deter the betterment of teams, but big market teams with multiple all-stars getting league high salaries would be the target for such deterrents.
Not that the NHLPA would ever go for it, but something needs to be done to get these problems under control. |

I think he's probably ok with sticking around if it comes to that. If he really wanted out that badly he'd wait a year until he can call the shots, not sign an offer sheet that could result in him playing out the rest of his career in Nashville.
Anyone know if you can include movement clauses in an offer sheet? I don't see why not but I haven't heard anything about one being included here. - Jeffmt
If he waits a year, he might be able to get the same kind of deal under a new CBA.
Re NTC's, I've heard you can't put them in offer sheets but can add them when contract is finalized. I have no idea if that is true. |

Your forgetting how much they want Weber. Your mez=1st rounder and voracek=2nd rounder is pathetic. Phil will never get him if Nash matches. |

If Phoenix can stick around for 16 years (and counting), this is not necessarily true. |

I foresee neither Giroux nor Couturier signing immediately to a contract when there time comes. I think Philly just opened the door to all teams to bid on there RFA's with no mercy and drive there price's through the roof. |

I'm assuming you meant me might not be able to get the same kind of deal in a year, and I agree, but still, signing a 14 year offer sheet is a gigantic risk if you want out of your current city that badly. What does he do if they match? |

the idea of a luxurt tax is good on paper but then teams such as Toronto NY Rangers Philly just to name a few would have no problem ponying up the cash and that still leaves small market teams on the outside looking in |

it's still 27 mil in less than 1 calendar year. - aightwebang17
And if the CBA had rules about how much per calendar year, that would matter. Since it's rules are about how much per season, it doesn't. |

You are correct, but that's how it is now. And if the luxery tax is high the bottom feeders don't lose money. So it is without question a better system |

Only Philly would be bound by a NMC or NTC.
b) If the Prior Club gives the Restricted Free Agent and his Certified Agent, if any, notice, in accordance with Exhibit 3 hereto, that it is exercising its Right of First Refusal (a "First Refusal Exercise Notice"), such notice to be substantially in the form of Exhibit 7 attached hereto, to the Player's and his Certified Agent's, if any, address or facsimile number listed on the Offer Sheet, if any, within the seven (7) day period, such Restricted Free Agent and the Prior Club shall be deemed to have entered into a binding agreement, which they shall promptly formalize in an SPC, containing: (i) all the Principal Terms (subject to subsection (e) below); and (ii) such additional terms as may be agreed upon between the Restricted Free Agent and the Prior Club. The Prior Club may not Trade that Restricted Free Agent for a period of one year from the date it exercises its Right of First Refusal.
...
(e) For the purposes of this Article, the Principal Terms of an Offer Sheet are limited to the term, Paragraph 1 Salary and Signing Bonus and Reporting Bonus the New Club offers to the Restricted Free Agent (currently and/or as Deferred Compensation in specified installments on specified dates) in consideration for his services as a hockey Player under the SPC. - NHL and On The Forecheck |

No one knows what the new CBA is going to look like. The Flyers certainly haven't done the owner's position any favors. Yeah, there would likely be some sort of term restrictions but that just means he'd get around $45-50M for 5 years rather than $110M for 14. There would still be a ton of money out there for him. |

And no, I'm not mad at all. Leino's paycheck doesn't come out of my pocket what so ever. |

They'll trade him 1 year after that long term deal and then he'll win the cup elsewhere.
History repeats itself. - theblueandgold
No just stating facts.....My favorite team always tries to do the best they can do to win....not winning isn't from lack of trying.
I can't fault them for that.
I would do either deal again....although the Richards deal was hard to take. |
