We finally found a GM that feels good about himself. Way more important than winning. |

I'm really glad Burke hasn't offered anyone a stupid 10 + year contract.
The Leafs have enough money to screw many small market teams out of their star players but he's avoided the temptation.
Good on ya Burkie.
The new CBA will likely kill this from happening anymore anyway. - cracka
There are a lot of questions around these long, multi year contracts and what will happen near the end of them.
We have very limited data around them but let's take a look at a few of them which involve older players.
Lecavalier - older and starting to deteriorate from his previous status as a perennial all-star. Large cap hit is a burden on the team, but they haven't been able to move him despite constant rumors.
Gomez - a massive cap hit for a whopping 2 goals. Considered one of the worst contract in sports.
Luongo - massive contact makes him unmovable, but the team needs to move him to bring Schneider to the forefront. Gillis is trying to save face by getting value for him, but the contract is a major deterrent for any team remotely interested.
DiPietro - well, just sad.
Yashin - just a mess that's taking its toll on a low budget team
Redden - buried in the minors for cap relief
Other contracts that haven't quite caused problems yet, but the future is unknown
Kovalchuk
Parise
Suter
Weber
Crosby
Richards
Carter
These players are still in their primes and haven't hit the older portions of their contracts yet. Injuries could ruin careers like it did DiPietro.
I'm personally glad Burke keeps a 5 year rule on his contracts. 5 years is a good amount of time to re-evaluate a player

Only that Lupul's situation was potentially career ending AND LIFE THREATENING!
Meanwhile, Pacioretty was out a few days later with his supposed "severe concussion" going to movies and sitting in a darkened room and staring brightly lit screen for 3 hours when light sensitivity is a symptom of "severe concussions" ... (If you actually have one)
Pacioretty won that award not because he was deserving, but because of the media sh!t storm that incident generated and the NHL wanted to put a positive spin on a bad situation and hopefully find some closure.
It's a joke and you know it. - As_I_See_It

You may be rightl, or not, and to be honest I don't care.
The Masterton is supposed to be about dedication to the sport. Not "best comeback from injury".
It's been ridiculous for years and it would have been as ridiculous if Lupul won it. - Scabeh
Exactly.
I mean, are there any Leaf fans out there cheering Jason Blake on when he won it a few years ago? Was this a source of pride for anyone out there?
So who gives a shyt if they give it to Pacioretty this year? |
