no it is black and white.... if the league says good contract then nothing was wrong... if thhe league says bad contract then something was wrong... only 2 options
- DarcyTucker16

Didn't it take them a week to investigate Kovalchuk? Didn't they retroactively look at Pronger's contract at that time too?

trying to make a point

idk i'd still say it's a loophole. it's legal within the rules technically, but you're crazy if you don't see that those last years at a super low rate compared to the beginning isn't there purposely to lower the cap hit.

it's the exact same structure as the kovy contract, just not as extreme.

i'll even admit that the brad richards contract follows similar suit and circumvents the cap.

good on you guys for doing it tho. it's legal and you guys are about to get the best defenseman in the NHL for 4 crap 1st round picks.

- rangerdanger94

Yep this kills nashville right here ,why cant they use an arbitrator like the brendan shanahan/scott stevens case.At least give nashville some sort of out here

Sorry, I find the analogy unnecessary and not well considered. No offense.

Either way, the Kovalchuk rulings spelled out exactly what they felt would be considered against the 'spirit of the CBA'. I suppose whether one would call it a loophole is semantics, we both see it for what it is. Brad Richards contract is very much the same situation, and there's more than a few others. I'll agree the rules weren't well considered, but we can only hope this time around the terms are better considered.

So, when New Jersey put a contract in place with Kovalchuk, that followed all of the specific parts of the CBA to a tee, why did they get penalized? Why was it found to be circumvention? How does that fit with your logic? That contract didn't break any specific parts of the CBA.
- prock

Because they specifically dealt with this contract type by changing the rules... if it fits in the new rules how can the league be like... uhhhhh ok were changing it again

And since that contract, rules where put in place.

poile wanted to play hardball with weber, now he can reap the fruits of his labours:

Dreger:
'Nashville didn't want to give Weber $7+ on a 3 year term last year and opted for team elected arbitration.'

so your saying all owners should have equal money? i am not saying this CBA is awesome... all i am saying is you guys cannot be pissed about the contract if the league approves... im saying its a well played deal by philly to get the guy they want IF it is within the rules... if the league approves... then it is in the rules
- DarcyTucker16

I just want a level playing field for all teams not just the rich, the league is awesome at 30 healthy teams

Because they used the language about cap circumvention to create precedent. There are now specific rules about what is and is not legal in these situations. Kovalchuk's situation and the results of it are exactly why this is a clearly legal contract.

I will say, though, I don't think it's exactly fair that NJD got penalized draft picks for being the guys who forced these rules into place.

ok so do i... i havent said this CBA is aweosme... personally i would love all salaries to be rolled back again but keep the cap low as well as the single salaries low... all im saying is that if this contract goes through right now it was an awesome play by philly and they should be praised for being gutsy when even nashville wouldnt and not critized for being theives

I wish I could've been a fly on the wall for the NASH-Weber negotiations. I'm stunned they didn't get a big money deal done, considering they offered big money to Suter.

Question for everyone Flyers and Nashville been great trading partners over the years you think Homer might be trying to help Poile out? What I mean by that is if they lose him this way maybe not as much back lash from the fans because the contract is crazy. Yes making a trade may be better cause what the get back but maybe not.

It is a thief type play ,but it is legal .That being said i still just dont like one team and their fans having to suffer to possible demise of their franchise its just bad optic to me

but again even still... why make him wait... trade him at the draft or before it got to this point? apparenlty philly has made multiple offers for him... its clear they wanted him and poile (whos apparently "good friends" with him) kept rejecting and asking for more... its clearly gotten to a ridiculous point for holmgren so he did what he needed to do to get the guy he wanted

Poile was doing what he could do with the resources at hand, doubt he wanted to spend more then 7 million on one player given the restricted budget the Preds have.

we did do it with brad richards.

i've said multiple times that holmgren played this very well and good for you guys. you guys should be thrilled but when you guys make excuses that it's not circumvention, it's a little annoying. you can admit it... it's alright. you'll still get the best defenseman in hockey.

although now that i'm thinking about it.. how many of these contracts has philly given out? pronger, carter, weber, bryz, richards

- rangerdanger94

Only deal on there that might have been a bad deal is Bryz, but its only been one year. Homer made deals of Richie and Carter and was able to get out of them and net a supreme return so far. Pronger's deal was fine, you can never predict injuries. If you weant to include Prongers as a bad then homer is 50%, but 100% in trying to make his team better. Can't fault him for that.

i dont think it was... i think the Kovy deal was a theif play... but to me the fact that the JUST addressed this specific rule not too long ago and changed it to make it legal in the CBA means if this follows those rules then its fine

This is not hard to figure out. If Weber signs the offer sheet, he wants to play in Nashville and they match the offer sheet. If he wants to test free agency, he does not sign the offer sheet and Nashville will look to trade.

All teams in the league operate under the same rules, some are better businessmen, some have better locations, some are better at scouting. The rules make it a level playing field.

I wonder if Philly could include Bryz in this deal to somehow even things out?

The rumor was that another team had upped their offer to make them the forerunner and that when they pulled the offersheet. Its their star they should be allowed to trade him to the highest bidder without interference from a team that had been priced out
