Sure might as well .How about we just have the richest teams just play for the cup ,because thats where we are headed .Great you can win a cup in a six or seven team league and you can boast how great it is

my point exactly.

baseball is an absolute joke because of this, and it seems like hockey is starting to follow suit,

Yea is great to see a team tank for several years and collect several top picks to win a cup and then not be able to afford players after (Chicago - Pitt (Oilers in the future)) compared to a team that year in and year out manages their cap and is in the playoffs by picking up players through drafting, trading and free agency......
- Jack-Meoff

The Hawks and Penguins simply did not have enought cap room......the Pred simply cannot afford Weber at that price , I dont call that missmanaging .....not the same thing.

As you all know I have been writing a ton about Weber and Philly for almost a year.
- Eklund

To be fair, you've been writing a ton about everyone and Philly.

How, exactly, is the CBA being cheated? The CBA allows offer sheets. It's a valid tactic to make your team better.

One can debate the "honor" of such a tactic, but it's certainly not cheating by the letter of the law.

- Jsaquella

It's not the offer sheet that will be reviewed, it's the structure of the contract. If it comes anywhere close to Kovalchuk, Bettman has to do something given what the owners are saying to the PA. It's even worse for him if Preds match and another small revenue team throws big bucks ($26m in one year) at a player.

sounds like we need an A$ league and a B$ league
- big_dion

The big market teams should be given the luxury of operating like a big market team. Not to the extent that it completely screws the smaller market teams but it's BS that just because other teams don't have the same financial resources that the big teams do that suddenly the big teams have to get handicapped.

Not saying that the cap should be gone, but a luxury tax would make total sense.

there is a reason the CBA is being discussed at this time, because its (frank)ed.
- big_dion

I said as much back in 2005. Still is the rules that govern the sport, so signing a RFA to a sheet is a valid, legal move.

not to mention i would kinda like this to become a bit more popular... it prevents teams tanking for 4 years (cough edmonton) because they know they have 7-8 years of these young guys... i find it stupid that getting last every year has become a "good thing" and people are actually happy their GM is doing Richard all to make the team better... its like a fat guy going to the olympics and getting last in the 100m but he gets to have a gold medal for 8 years and then having the actual winner of the race signing it away.

The biggest issue in the Kovalchuk deal was, the original deal had such a drop off after age 42 that it was easy to expect the player to retire well before the deal was done.

Weber's deal takes him to age 40 and stops. The structure will still be interesting, but I would think that the Flyers followed the letter of the law in making it.

Offer sheets are fine with me, I've got zero problems with those.

But the BS contracts like Luongo, Kovalchuk and the Suter/Parise contracts are just crap...those were cheating the CBA and the GM's know it. And if we can't use the word cheat then it's 150% circumvention.

Right, b/c spending all that money is working out so well for the Phillies, Yankees, and Red Sox.

Who are the playoff teams right now? nationals, pirates, reds, giants, braves & Yankees, orioles, white sox, rangers, angels.

And the Yankees have no shot at the WS this year b/c of their pitching.

Quit your crying.
